Abstract

Methods and devices are provided for sample collection and sample separation. In one embodiment, a device is provided for use with a formed component liquid sample, the device comprising at least one sample inlet for receiving said sample; at least a first outlet for outputting only a liquid portion of the formed component liquid sample; at least a second outlet for outputting the formed component liquid sample at least a first material mixed therein.

Claims (19)

1. A device for use with a sample having a suspension of formed components, the device comprising:

at least one sample inlet for receiving said sample with the formed components;

at least one outlet configured for outputting substantially only a liquid portion of the sample; and

a separation material comprising polysulfone and functionalized with a material thereon and positioned along at least a first pathway between the sample inlet and the outlet wherein said separation material is configured to remove formed components from the sample prior to outputting the liquid portion at the outlet;

a distributor positioned with the separation material to define an interface provides for propagating the sample laterally over the separation material relative to a long longitudinal axis of separation;

wherein the separation material is functionalized with material comprising N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) ester terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the functionalization creates a hydrophilic surface that reduces protein adsorption.

3. A method comprising:

using a sample having a suspension of formed components,

passing the sample through a separation material comprising polysulfone, wherein the separation material is functionalized with a material thereon and configured to remove formed components from the sample prior to outputting a liquid portion of the sample;

wherein said passing comprises using a distributor positioned with the separation material to define an interface provides for propagating the sample laterally over the separation material relative to a long longitudinal axis of separation;

wherein the separation material is functionalized with material comprising N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) ester terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains.

4. The device of claim 1 further comprising a fill indicator to indicate when a minimum fill level has been reached.

5. A method comprising:

using a sample having a suspension of formed components,

passing the sample through a separation material comprising polysulfone, wherein the separation material is functionalized with a material thereon and configured to remove formed components from the sample prior to outputting a liquid portion of the sample;

wherein said passing comprises using a distributor positioned with the separation material to define an interface provides for propagating the sample laterally over the separation material relative to a long longitudinal axis of separation;

wherein the separation material is functionalized with material comprising N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) ester terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains;

wherein the separation material is held in the device under compression.
