Abstract

A base station receives from a first core network entity, packet(s) for a wireless device in an RRC inactive state. The base station initiates a RAN paging procedure comprising sending RAN paging message(s) to second base station(s). The RAN paging message(s) comprises a first identifier of the wireless device. The base station determines a failure of the RAN paging procedure in response to not receiving a response of the RAN paging message(s). The base station sends a first message to a second core network entity in response to the failure of the RAN paging procedure. The base station receives a second message from the second core network entity in response to the first message. The second message comprises a tunnel endpoint identifier of a third base station for forwarding the packet(s). The base station sends to the third base station, the packet(s) based on the tunnel endpoint identifier.

Claims (44)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, by a first base station from a first core network entity, one or more packets for a wireless device in a radio resource control (RRC) inactive state;

initiating, by the first base station, a radio access network (RAN) paging procedure comprising sending at least one RAN paging message to at least one second base station, wherein the at least one RAN paging message comprises a first identifier of the wireless device;

determining, by the first base station, a failure of the RAN paging procedure in response to not receiving a response of the at least one RAN paging message;

sending, by the first base station to a second core network entity and in response to the failure of the RAN paging procedure, a first message;

receiving, by the first base station from the second core network entity and in response to the first message, a second message comprising a tunnel endpoint identifier of a third base station for forwarding the one or more packets; and

sending, by the first base station to the third base station, the one or more packets based on the tunnel endpoint identifier.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

initiating, by the second core network entity and in response to receiving the first message, a core network paging procedure comprising sending a first paging message to the third base station, wherein the first paging message comprises a second identifier of the wireless device; and

receiving, by the second core network entity from the third base station, a third message in response to the first paging message, wherein the third message comprises the tunnel endpoint identifier of the third base station.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first core network entity comprises a control plane core network node; and

the second core network entity comprises a user plane core network node.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending of the one or more packets is via a direct tunnel between the first base station and the third base station, the direct tunnel associated with the tunnel endpoint identifier.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tunnel endpoint identifier comprises an internet protocol (IP) address of the third base station.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first message indicates the failure of the RAN paging procedure.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one RAN paging message comprises at least one of:

a RAN notification information;

a context identifier of the wireless device; or

a reason of initiating the RAN paging procedure.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one second base station transmits a second RAN paging message via a radio interface in response to receiving the at least one RAN paging message.

9. A base station comprising:

one or more processors; and

memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the base station to:

receive, from a first core network entity, one or more packets for a wireless device in a radio resource control (RRC) inactive state;

initiate a radio access network (RAN) paging procedure comprising sending at least one RAN paging message to at least one second base station, wherein the at least one RAN paging message comprises a first identifier of the wireless device;

determine a failure of the RAN paging procedure in response to not receiving a response of the at least one RAN paging message;

send, to a second core network entity and in response to the failure of the RAN paging procedure, a first message;

receive, from the second core network entity and in response to the first message, a second message comprising a tunnel endpoint identifier of a third base station for forwarding the one or more packets; and

send, to the third base station, the one or more packets based on the tunnel endpoint identifier.

10. The base station of claim 9 , wherein:

the first core network entity comprises a control plane core network node; and

the second core network entity comprises a user plane core network node.

11. The base station of claim 9 , wherein the sending of the one or more packets is via a direct tunnel between the base station and the third base station, the direct tunnel associated with the tunnel endpoint identifier.

12. The base station of claim 9 , wherein the tunnel endpoint identifier comprises an internet protocol (IP) address of the third base station.

13. The base station of claim 9 , wherein the first message indicates the failure of the RAN paging procedure.

14. The base station of claim 9 , wherein the at least one RAN paging message comprises at least one of:

a RAN notification information;

a context identifier of the wireless device; or

a reason of initiating the RAN paging procedure.

15. The base station of claim 9 , wherein the at least one second base station transmits a second RAN paging message via a radio interface in response to receiving the at least one RAN paging message.

16. The base station of claim 9 , wherein the second core network entity:

initiate, in response to receiving the first message, a core network paging procedure comprising sending a first paging message to the third base station, wherein the first paging message comprises a second identifier of the wireless device; and

receive, from the third base station, a third message in response to the first paging message, wherein the third message comprises the tunnel endpoint identifier of the third base station.
