Abstract

An initial set of parameters for operating one or more detection tools is automatically derived and subsequently adjusted so that each detection tool is more or less sensitive to signal characteristics in a region of interest. Detection tool(s) may be applied to physiological signals sensed from a patient (such as EEG signals) and may be configured to run in an implanted medical device that is programmable with the parameters to look for rhythmic activity, spike activity, and power changes in the sensed signals, etc. A detection tool may be selected, and parameter values derived in a logical sequence and/or in pairs based on a graphical representation of an activity type which may be selected by a user, for example, by clicking and dragging on the graphic via a GUI. Displayed simulations allow a user to assess what will be detected with a derived parameter set and then to adjust the sensitivity of the set or start over as desired.

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising:

obtaining an electrographic signal of a type capable of being sensed by an active implantable device;

running a simulation of the instance of the selected detection tool on one or more regions of the electrographic signal, to determine if a detection criterion is met; and

if the detection criterion is met, implementing the instance of the selected detection tool in an active implantable medical device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein defining a fixed region of interest within the electrographic signal comprises:

presenting a representation of the electrographic signal on a graphical user interface;

receiving through a user input, a selection of a portion of the electrographic signal; and

automatically selecting a subportion of the selected portion of the electrographic signal as the fixed region of interest.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the subportion comprises a prefixed duration of the selected portion of the electrographic signal.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of different types of detection tools comprises a rhythmic detection tool, a spike detection tool, and a nonlinear energy increase detection tool.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more regions of the electrographic signal on which a simulation of the instance of the selected detection tool is run excludes the fixed region of interest.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of detector parameter values defines how the instance of the detection tools operates.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein processing the fixed region of interest to select a type of detection tool from among a plurality of different types of detection tools comprises:

computing at least two of the following metrics 1) a minimum peak amplitude in a frequency spectrum of the fixed region of interest, 2) a highest frequency with a peak amplitude that is greater than or equal to the minimum peak amplitude within the fixed region of interest, 3) a quality factor derived from a frequency spectrum of the fixed region of interest; 4) an amplitude range in a time domain of the fixed region of interest, 5) a low frequency energy corresponding to the total energy in a frequency range of a frequency spectrum of the fixed region of interest; 6) a frequency of a peak amplitude in a frequency spectrum of the fixed region of interest, and 7) an initial slope in a frequency spectrum of the fixed region of interest; and

recognizing a pattern corresponding to one of a rhythmic pattern, a spiked pattern or an undetermined pattern by applying the at least two metrics to one or more of a plurality of rules.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein each rule within a first set of rules has a positive outcome resulting in a recognized pattern corresponding to one of a rhythmic pattern, a spiked pattern or an undetermined pattern and a negative outcome resulting in an advancement to a next rule.
