Abstract

A device, a kit and a method are presented for permanently augmenting the pump function of the left heart. The basis for the presented innovation is an augmentation of the physiologically up and down movement of the mitral valve during each heart cycle. By means of catheter technique, minimal surgery, or open heart surgery implants are inserted into the left ventricle, the mitral valve annulus, the left atrium and adjacent tissue in order to augment the natural up and down movement of the mitral valve and thereby increasing the left ventricular diastolic filling and the piston effect of the closed mitral valve when moving towards the apex of said heart in systole and/or away from said apex in diastole.

Claims (10)

1. A medical device adapted to enhance intra-cardiac blood circulation of a heart of a patient by assisting pump action of said heart, said device including an annulus attachment for fixating an end of said device to a cardiac valve annulus, said annulus attachment connected to an axial actuator via a rod that extends from the annulus attachment towards a coaptation line of said cardiac valve, and said rod crosses the cardiac valve at said coaptation line to apply a mechanical supporting force to the valve annulus during at least a portion of systole for augmenting the natural pumping force of the heart, and/or during at least a portion of diastole for augmenting a natural filling of the ventricle of said heart.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein said annulus attachment is at least partly loop shaped and adapted to be affixed to the valve annulus, and wherein said rod is attached to said annulus attachment at a circumference of said annulus attachment.

3. The device claim 1 , wherein said annulus attachment comprises a loop that is positionable along at least a portion of the cardiac valve annulus.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein said annulus attachment is an annuloplasty ring for treatment of regurgitation of said cardiac valve.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein said annuloplasty ring has a shape selected from the group consisting of: annular shape, D-formed shape, open ring, C-formed shape.

6. The device of claim 4 wherein said annuloplasty ring is configured to improve closure of the cardiac valve leaflets during systole.

7. The device of claim 4 , wherein said annuloplasty ring is a cardiac valve intra-atrial or intra-ventricular anchor unit.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein said axial actuator acts on said rod to change a distance between the axial actuator and the annulus attachment for said augmenting the natural pumping force of the heart.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein said axial actuator is configured to act against the apex of the heart in order to support displacement of the cardiac valve.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein said axial actuator is timed to provide said mechanical supporting force in synchrony with the cardiac cycle.
