Abstract

A method may include coupling a proximal end of a first cannula to a first manipulator of a surgical system, the first manipulator being configured to remotely actuate movement of the first cannula, wherein the first cannula comprises a rigid portion disposed between the proximal end and a distal end of the first cannula, the rigid portion having a curved longitudinal axis, and coupling a proximal end of a second cannula to a second manipulator of a surgical system, the second manipulator being configured to remotely actuate movement of the second cannula, wherein the second cannula comprises a rigid portion disposed between the proximal end and a distal end of the second cannula, the rigid portion having a curved longitudinal axis. The coupling of the first and second cannulas to the respective first and second manipulators can further include positioning respective first and second centers of motion of the first and second cannulas proximate to each other, and positioning respective longitudinal axes of the first and second cannulas at the first and second centers of motion across one another.

in the second control mode, a third surgical instrument, in a state operably coupled to the first slave manipulator, is configured to extend through a single incision in a second body wall, and a fourth surgical instrument in a state operably coupled to the second slave manipulator, is configured to extend through the single incision in the second body wall.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

in the first control mode, the first master manipulator is operably coupled to the first slave manipulator and the second master manipulator is operably coupled to the second slave manipulator; and

in the second control mode, the first master manipulator is operably coupled to the second slave manipulator and the second master manipulator is operably coupled to the first slave manipulator.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

in the second control mode, a first cannula is configured to extend through the single incision in the second body wall and to receive the third surgical instrument, and a second cannula is configured to extend through the single incision in the second body wall and to receive the fourth surgical instrument.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein:

at least one of the first cannula and the second cannula comprise a curved portion.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein:

the first cannula is a straight cannula, and the second cannula comprises a curved portion.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

one of the first and second surgical instruments and one of the third and fourth surgical instruments comprises a camera.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first arm comprising the first slave manipulator and a first joint; and

a second arm comprising the second slave manipulator and a second joint.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the first and second surgical instruments each comprise a rigid shaft having a straight longitudinal axis; and

one or both of the third and fourth surgical instruments comprise a flexible shaft.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the control system is configured to detect a type of shaft of a surgical instrument coupled to the first slave manipulator and the second slave manipulator.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein:

the control system is configured to automatically switch to the second control mode based on detection of a flexible-shaft surgical instrument coupled to the first slave manipulator or the second slave manipulator.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein:

the control system is configured to automatically switch to the first control mode based on detection of a straight-shaft surgical instrument connected to the first slave manipulator or the second slave manipulator.

12. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a cannula comprising a curved portion configured to receive one of the third surgical instrument and the fourth surgical instrument, the cannula configured to be operably coupled to one of the first slave manipulator and the second slave manipulator, wherein the control system is configured to detect the cannula when the cannula is in an operably coupled state with the first slave manipulator or the second slave manipulator.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein:

the control system is configured to automatically switch to the second control mode based on detection of the cannula with the curved portion in the operably coupled state with the first slave manipulator or the second slave manipulator.

14. The system of claim 1 , further comprising: a straight cannula configured to receive one of the first surgical instrument and the second surgical instrument, the straight cannula configured to be operably coupled with one of the first slave manipulator and the second slave manipulator, wherein one or both of the first and second surgical instruments comprise a flexible shaft instrument, and

the control system is configured to detect the straight cannula and the flexible-shaft instrument in the operably coupled state with one of the first slave manipulator and the second slave manipulator and to enter a non-operational state based on detection of the straight cannula and flexible-shaft instrument.

15. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a display operably connected to the control system, wherein:

in the first control mode, the control system is configured to display a portion of the first surgical instrument on a first side of the display and a portion of the second surgical instrument on a second side of the display, and

in the second control mode, the control system is configured to display a portion of the third surgical instrument on the second side of the display and a portion of the fourth surgical instrument on the first side of the display.
