Abstract

Systems and methods for flexible conveyance in an assembly-line or manufacturing process are disclosed. A fleet of self-driving vehicles and a fleet-management system can be used to convey workpieces through a sequence of workstations at which operations are performed in order to produce a finished assembly. An assembly can be transported to a first workstation using a self-driving vehicle, where an operation is performed on the assembly. Subsequently, the assembly can be transported to a second workstation using the self-driving vehicle. The operation can be performed on the assembly while it is being conveyed by the self-driving vehicle.

continuing to transport the assembly to the first workstation.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising measuring the duration of time for which the vehicle is stopped in response to the obstruction;

wherein continuing to transport the assembly comprises accelerating the vehicle to a speed based on the measured duration of time.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the assembly is a first assembly, the self-driving vehicle is a first self-driving vehicle, and the operation is a first operation; the method further comprising:

subsequent to transporting the first assembly to the first workstation, transporting a second assembly to the first workstation using a second self-driving vehicle;

performing the first operation on the second assembly at the first workstation, and performing a second operation on the first assembly at the second workstation; and

subsequently transporting the second assembly to the second workstation using the second self-driving vehicle, and transporting the first assembly to a third workstation using the first self-driving vehicle.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the transporting the first assembly to the third workstation is based on the mission updated with assembly-plan information.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the assembly-plan information is received and the mission is updated with assembly-plan information prior to transporting the assembly to the second workstation; and

transporting the assembly to the second workstation is based on the mission updated with assembly-plan information.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the assembly-plan information is received from at least one of the first workstation or the second workstation.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the assembly-plan information comprises at least one of a sequence of operations to be performed on the assembly, a sequence of workstations for transporting the assembly to, a sequence of waypoints for transporting the assembly to, or a location of a subsequent workstation.

a plurality of workstations comprising a first workstation for performing a first operation and a second workstation for performing a second operation;

a self-driving vehicle transporting an assembly, the vehicle having a processor,

wherein the processor of the vehicle is configured to:

based on a mission, control the vehicle to transport the assembly to the first workstation, the mission being based on one or more workstations of the plurality of workstations;

subsequently, control the vehicle to transport the assembly to the second workstation;

receive assembly-plan information from at least one workstation of the plurality of workstations; and

update the mission based on the assembly-plan information,

wherein the assembly remains on the vehicle while the first operation is performed on the assembly at the first workstation and the second operation is performed on the assembly at the second workstation.

14. The system of claim 13 further comprising a fleet-management system having a processor, wherein the processor of the fleet-management system is configured to:

receive a request for the assembly to be assembled according to a sequence of workstations;

generate the mission based on the sequence of workstations; and

transmit the mission to the vehicle; and

wherein the processor of the vehicle is further configured to receive the mission from the fleet-management system.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein:

a first waypoint corresponds to the first workstation and a second waypoint corresponds to the second workstation;
