Abstract

A novel hybrid lithium-ion anode material based on coaxially coated Si shells on vertically aligned carbon nanofiber (CNF) arrays. The unique cup-stacking graphitic microstructure makes the bare vertically aligned CNF array an effective Li + intercalation medium. Highly reversible Li + intercalation and extraction were observed at high power rates. More importantly, the highly conductive and mechanically stable CNF core optionally supports a coaxially coated amorphous Si shell which has much higher theoretical specific capacity by forming fully lithiated alloy. Addition of surface effect dominant sites in close proximity to the intercalation medium results in a hybrid device that includes advantages of both batteries and capacitors.

Claims (31)

1. An electrode comprising:

a conductive substrate; and

a material disposed on the substrate, wherein the material comprises:

carbon;

an intercalation material comprising silicon interspersed with the carbon that reversibly adsorbs charge carriers within a bulk of the intercalation material; and

a plurality of nanoparticles that provide surface effect dominant sites that catalyze intercalation of the charge carriers into the intercalation material.

2. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the intercalation material is in the form of particles, suspensions, clusters, droplets, or combinations thereof.

3. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the intercalation material comprises particles having sizes in a range of 0.1 μm to 29 μm.

4. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the intercalation material comprises particles having sizes in a range of 5 μm to 15 μm.

5. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of nanoparticles comprise transition metal oxides, metal nitrides, carbon, activated carbon, graphene, graphite, titanate, crystalline silicon, tin, germanium, metal hydrides, iron phosphates, polyaniline, mesophase carbon or a mixture of two or more thereof.

6. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of nanoparticles comprise carbon.

7. The electrode of claim 1 , further comprising a binder.

8. The electrode of claim 7 , wherein the binder comprises polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), styrene butadiene rubber, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), or carbo-xymethyl-cellulose (CMC).

9. The electrode of claim 8 , wherein the binder further comprises conductive polymer, graphite, graphene, metal nanoparticles, carbon nano-tubes, carbon nano fibers, metal nano-wires, or Super-P (conductive carbon black).

10. An energy storage system comprising:

a cathode;

an electrolyte including one or more charge carriers; and

an anode separated from the cathode by the electrolyte, the anode comprising:

a conductive substrate; and

a material disposed on the substrate, wherein the material comprises:

carbon;

an intercalation material comprising silicon interspersed with the carbon that reversibly adsorbs charge carriers within a bulk of the intercalation material; and

a plurality of nanoparticles that provide surface effect dominant sites that catalyze intercalation of the charge carriers into the intercalation material.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the intercalation material is in the form of particles, suspensions, clusters, droplets, or combinations thereof.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the intercalation material comprises particles having sizes in a range of 0.1 μm to 29 μm.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the intercalation material comprises particles having sizes in a range of 5 μm to 15 μm.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of nanoparticles comprise transition metal oxides, metal nitrides, carbon, activated carbon, graphene, graphite, titanate, crystalline silicon, tin, germanium, metal hydrides, iron phosphates, polyaniline, mesophase carbon or a mixture of two or more thereof.
