Abstract

A compression plate kit that allows for manual compression of a bone discontinuity includes a bone plate, two or more reduction screws, and a compression clamp. The compression clamp can include engagement members configured to engage the reduction screws, thereby allowing a practitioner to compress a bone discontinuity by manually closing the compression clamp. One or more implementations of a kit of the present invention can provide a practitioner with physical or tactile feedback during the compression of a bone discontinuity, and thus, provide the practitioner with the ability to better control the compression and spacing of bone portions during a reduction.

Claims (20)

1. A surgical kit for use in surgically repairing bone having a first bone portion and a second bone portion, the kit comprising:

a bone plate having a fixation hole and a slide channel, the bone plate configured to be placed across a bone discontinuity, wherein the bone discontinuity comprises one of a bone joint or a bone fracture;

a first reduction fastener and a second reduction fastener, wherein the first reduction fastener is adapted to be positioned within the fixation hole of the bone plate and secured to the first bone portion, and wherein the second reduction fastener is adapted to be positioned within the slide channel and secured to the second bone portion;

a compression clamp having a first engagement member and a second engagement member adapted to engage the first and second reduction fasteners, respectively; and

a coupler having a first end configured to couple to the first reduction fastener and a second end configured to couple to the second reduction fastener;

wherein the compression clamp is configured to be closed by squeezing together handles of the compression clamp, thereby drawing the second reduction fastener and the second bone portion along the slide channel toward the first reduction fastener and the first bone portion to reduce a distance between the first reduction fastener and the second reduction fastener, and wherein the coupler is adjustable to provide adjustment of the distance between the first reduction fastener and the second reduction fastener.

The surgical kit of claim 1 , further comprising a first fixation fastener and a second fixation fastener, the first fixation fastener configured to be secured to the bone plate and to the first bone portion and the second fixation fastener configured to be secured to the bone plate and the second bone portion.

3. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the coupler is coupled to the first reduction fastener and the second reduction fastener proximally to the first engagement member and the second engagement member.

4. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the engagement members have a U-shaped mounting portion.

5. The surgical kit of claim 1 , wherein the reduction fasteners comprise first and second elongate screws, each of the elongate screws comprising a non-threaded portion that is at least about as long as a threaded portion of the elongate screws.

6. The kit of claim 5 , wherein the reduction fasteners comprise first and second elongate screws, each of the elongate screws comprising a non-threaded portion that is at least about three times as long as a threaded portion of the elongate screws.

7. A surgical kit for use in surgically repairing bone having a first bone portion and a second bone portion, the kit comprising:

a bone plate having a fixation hole and a slide channel, the bone plate configured to be placed across a bone discontinuity, wherein the bone discontinuity comprises one of a bone joint or a bone fracture;

a first reduction fastener and a second reduction fastener, wherein the first reduction fastener is adapted to be positioned within the fixation hole of the bone plate and secured to the first bone portion, and wherein the second reduction fastener is adapted to be positioned within the slide channel and secured to the second bone portion;

a compression clamp having a first engagement member and a second engagement member adapted to engage the first and second reduction fasteners, respectively; and

a coupler configured to couple an upper portion of the first reduction fastener to an upper portion of the second reduction fastener and to enable selective adjustment of the positions of the reduction fasteners;

wherein the first engagement member is configured to engage the first reduction fastener and wherein the second engagement member is configured to engage the second reduction fastener, and wherein the compression clamp is configured to be closed by squeezing together handles of the compression clamp, thereby drawing the second reduction fastener and the second bone portion along the slide channel toward the first reduction fastener and the first bone portion.

8. The surgical kit of claim 7 , wherein the coupler includes a turnbuckle.

9. The surgical kit of claim 7 , wherein the coupler has a first eyelet configured to engage a pin of the first reduction fastener and a second eyelet configured to engage a pin of the second reduction fastener.

The surgical kit of claim 9 , wherein the coupler includes a first threaded member extending from the first eyelet and a second threaded member extending from the second eyelet and further includes a threaded housing configured to threadedly receive each of the first threaded member and the second threaded member.
