Abstract

An installation tool and fastener is particularly adapted for fastening a top plate to a roof support member and other structural connections. The installation tool comprises a telescopic tool assembly which transfers torque from a power driver tool to a fastener drive coupler. The installation tool has a receiver guide which is configured to concentrically guide a fastener into driver engagement with a fastener coupler. The coupler may have a driver tip with radial projections, a Philips driver tip or a square driver tip. In one embodiment, the installation tool fastener has a head with a maximum head diameter equal to the major thread diameter and a recess for coupling with the drive coupler.

Claims (34)

1. An installation tool and fastener for fastening a first member to a second member comprising:

a fastener having a head with a recess and a maximum diameter and a shank extending from said head and having an uninterrupted thread with a major diameter substantially equal to said maximum head diameter;

a transfer assembly comprising an elongated telescopic tube assembly having a proximal end portion and a distal end, said proximal end portion adapted to receive a power tool, and a torque transfer unit disposed in said tube assembly for transferring torque produced by a received power tool to a fastener coupler adjacent said distal end;

a guide assembly mounted at said distal end and having a positioning guide and a continuously cylindrical fastener channel having a channel proximal end and a channel distal end and defining an axis and having a uniform channel diameter which is slightly greater than said major diameter and configured to receive said fastener upon axial insertion through said channel distal end; and

a receiver guide adjacent to said fastener coupler, said receiver guide comprising a fixed surface relative to said axis and configured to concentrically guide said fastener head as said fastener head traverses from the channel distal end toward said fastener coupler,

so that when said positioning guide is positioned relative said first member, said fastener is received in said channel and the received tool is energized, said fastener coupler extends into said head recess to rotatably engage said fastener and the received tool drives said fastener axially through said distal end and into said first member and into said second member.

2. The installation tool and fastener of claim 1 wherein said receiver guide comprises an inwardly tapered axially symmetric surface which tapers from a first axial position of enlarged diameter to a second axial position of reduced diameter, said second axial position farther from said channel distal end than said first axial position.

3. The installation tool and fastener of claim 1 wherein said receiver guide is an axially moveable dual guide.

4. The installation tool and fastener of claim 1 wherein said fastener coupler comprises a driver member selected from the group consisting of a driver having a plurality of radial projections, a Phillips driver and a square driver.

5. The installation tool and fastener of claim 1 wherein said maximum head diameter is approximately 0.26 inches and said major diameter is approximately 0.26 inches.

6. The installation tool and fastener of claim 1 wherein said fastener has a tapered tip and said thread extends onto the tapered tip.

7. The installation tool and fastener of claim 1 wherein the fastener channel is configured to be accessible by a user for fastener loading.

8. An installation tool and fastener for fastening a first member to a second member comprising:

a fastener with a maximum head diameter and a shank extending from said head and having a thread with a major diameter substantially equal to said maximum head diameter;

a transfer assembly comprising an elongated telescopic tube assembly having a proximal end portion and a distal end, said proximal end portion adapted to receive a power tool, and a torque transfer unit disposed in said tube assembly for transferring torque produced by a received power tool to a fastener coupler adjacent said distal end;

a guide assembly mounted at said distal end and having a positioning guide and a continuously cylindrical fastener channel having a channel distal end and a channel proximal end and defining an axis and having a uniform channel diameter which is slightly greater than said major diameter and configured to receive said fastener upon axial insertion through said channel distal end; and

a receiver guide adjacent to said fastener coupler, said receiver guide having a fixed surface relative to said axis and configured to concentrically guide said fastener head toward said fastener coupler as said fastener traverses from said channel distal end toward said channel proximal end,

so that when said guide is positioned relative said first member, said fastener is received in said channel and a received tool is energized, said fastener coupler engages said head to rotatably drive said fastener axially through said channel distal end.

9. The installation tool and fastener of claim 8 wherein said receiver guide comprises an inwardly tapered axially symmetric surface.

10. The installation tool and fastener of claim 8 wherein said receiver guide is an axially moveable dual guide.

11. The installation tool and fastener of claim 8 wherein said fastener coupler comprises a driver member selected from the group consisting of a driver having a plurality of radial projections, a Phillips driver and a square driver.

12. The installation tool and fastener of claim 8 wherein said maximum head diameter is approximately 0.26 inches and said major diameter is approximately 0.26 inches.

13. The installation tool and fastener of claim 8 wherein said fastener has a length of approximately 6 inches, the thread extends a length of approximately 5 inches and the head has an axial length of approximately 0.20 inches and has a uniform inward taper at an acute angle from the maximum head diameter.

14. The installation tool and fastener of claim 8 wherein the fastener channel is configured to be accessible by a user for fastener loading.

15. An installation tool and fastener comprising:

a fastener having a head and a shank extending from said head and having a thread with a major diameter;

a transfer assembly comprising an elongated telescopic tube assembly having a proximal end portion and a distal end, said proximal end portion adapted to receive a power tool, and a torque transfer unit disposed in said tube assembly for transferring torque produced by a received power tool to a fastener coupler adjacent said distal end;

a guide assembly mounted at said distal end and having a positioning guide and a fastener channel having a channel distal end and a channel proximal end and defining an axis and having a uniform channel diameter which is slightly greater than said major diameter and configured to receive said fastener upon axial insertion through said channel distal end; and

a receiver guide adjacent to said fastener coupler, said receiver guide comprising an inwardly tapered axially symmetric surface fixed relative to said axis and having an enlarged diameter potion and a reduced diameter portion wherein said enlarged diameter portion is closer to said distal channel end than said reduced diameter portion and said surface is configured to concentrically guide said fastener head into engagement with said fastener coupler as said head traverses in a direction from said distal channel end toward said proximal channel end,

so that when said positioning guide is positioned relative said first member, said fastener is received in said channel and a received tool is energized, said fastener coupler extends into a head recess to rotatably engage and drive said fastener axially through said channel distal end.

16. The installation tool and fastener of claim 15 wherein said receiver guide is an axially moveable dual guide.

17. The installation tool and fastener of claim 15 wherein said fastener coupler comprises a driver member selected from the group consisting of a driver having a plurality of radial projections, a Phillips driver and a square driver.

18. The installation tool and fastener of claim 15 wherein said fastener has a maximum head diameter of approximately 0.26 inches and said major diameter of approximately 0.26 inches and wherein said thread has a pitch of 7.5 threads per inch and a thread flank angle from 25° to 45°.
