Abstract

A method of forming a drag reducing polymer formulation. The method begins by forming a drag reducing polymer. A hydrocarbon additive is then incorporated with the drag reducing polymer to form a drag reducing polymer formulation. The drag reducing polymer formulation is then used as a drag reducer in hydrocarbon pipelines.

Claims (27)

1. A drag reducing polymer formulation, comprising:

a mixture, comprising:

a drag reducing polymer; and

a hydrocarbon additive selected from the group consisting of: heptane, isooctane, kerosene, N-Paraffin depleted kerosene, and combinations thereof, wherein a weight percentage of the hydrocarbon additive in the drag reducing polymer formulation ranges from about 3 wt % to about 16 wt %.

2. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 1 , wherein the drag reducing polymer is a latex drag reducing polymer.

3. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 1 , wherein the drag reducing polymer is formed via emulsion polymerization.

4. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 1 , wherein the hydrocarbon additive is kerosene.

5. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 1 , wherein the hydrocarbon additive has a distillation temperature of less than or equal to about 300° C.

6. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 1 , wherein the drag reducing polymer suppresses the growth of turbulent eddies in hydrocarbon pipelines.

7. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 1 , wherein the drag reducing polymer comprises at least about 25,000 repeating units.

8. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 1 , wherein the drag reducing polymer has a weight average molecular weight of at least 1×10 6 g/mol.

9. A drag reducing polymer formulation, comprising:

a mixture, comprising:

a drag reducing polymer; and

kerosene, wherein a weight percentage of the kerosene in the drag reducing polymer formulation ranges from about 3 wt % to about 16 wt %.

10. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 9 , wherein the drag reducing polymer is a latex drag reducing polymer.

11. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 10 , wherein the drag reducing polymer has a weight average molecular weight of at least 1×10 6 g/mol.

12. A method, comprising:

injecting a drag reducing polymer formulation into a pipeline containing a first hydrocarbon, wherein the drag reducing polymer formulation comprises a mixture comprising a drag reducing polymer and a second hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of: heptane, isooctane, kerosene, N-Paraffin depleted kerosene, and combinations thereof, wherein a weight percentage of the second hydrocarbon in the drag reducing polymer formulation ranges from about 3 wt % to about 16 wt %.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first hydrocarbon is crude oil.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second hydrocarbon is kerosene.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the drag reducing polymer suppresses a growth of turbulent eddies in the pipeline.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the second hydrocarbon has a distillation temperature of less than or equal to about 300° C.

17. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 1 , wherein the mixture further comprises a nonionic surfactant.

18. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 1 , wherein the mixture further comprises an anionic surfactant.

19. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 9 , wherein the mixture further comprises a nonionic surfactant.

20. The drag reducing polymer formulation of claim 9 , wherein the mixture further comprises an anionic surfactant.
