Abstract

A shock absorber for a vehicle having a damper and a first and second springs mounted coaxially around the damper and a preload adjuster for partially compressing at least one of the springs independently of the compression stroke. In one embodiment the preload adjuster is remotely controllable. In another embodiment the shock absorber includes an additional mechanism for preloading at least one of the springs.

2. The shock absorber of claim 1 wherein said remotely controllable preload adjuster comprises:

a piston chamber having a volume, wherein a change to said volume of said piston chamber causes movement of said preload piston relative to said damper.

3. The shock absorber of claim 2 further comprising:

a compressible fluid disposed within said piston chamber.

4. The shock absorber of claim 1 , further comprising:

said preload piston slidably coupled to said remotely controllable preload adjuster, said preload piston coupled to an exterior surface of said damper, said preload piston comprising:

at first spring axial abutment structure; and

a second spring axial abutment structure;

said at least one of said first spring and said second spring mounted around said exterior surface of said damper between said first spring axial abutment structure and said second spring axial abutment structure;

wherein said preload piston causes said at least one of said first spring and said second spring to become more compressed or less compressed as said preload piston moves relative to said damper.

5. The shock absorber of claim 4 wherein said first spring axial abutment structure further comprises:

a first diameter abutment configured to couple with said at least one of said first spring and said second spring.

6. The shock absorber of claim 4 wherein said second spring axial abutment structure further comprises:

a first surface configured to couple with said at least one of said first spring and said second spring.

7. The shock absorber of claim 1 wherein said remotely controllable preload adjuster is remotely controllable based upon data corresponding to said shock absorber, said data selected from the group consisting of: speed of said rod, compression strain of said rod, and eyelet strain of said shock absorber.

8. The shock absorber of claim 1 wherein said remotely controllable preload adjuster is remotely controllable based upon vehicle operation variables corresponding to a vehicle to which said suspension is coupled, said vehicle operation variables selected from the group consisting of: vehicle speed in conjunction with the angular location of said vehicle's steering wheel, axle force and/or moments applied to various parts of said vehicle, pressure in a tire of said vehicle, and vehicle trajectory.

9. A shock absorber comprising:

a damper with a cylinder, said cylinder having a piston and rod therein;

a plurality of springs mounted around said damper said plurality of springs disposed to become compressed during a compression stroke of said damper; and

a preload piston coupled to at least one of said plurality of springs, said preload piston disposed to cause said at least one of said plurality of springs to become more compressed or less compressed as said preload piston moves relative to said damper;

a remotely controllable preload adjuster coupled to at least one of said plurality of springs, said remotely controllable preload adjuster configured to partially compress or expand said at least one of said plurality of springs independently of said compression stroke; and

a logic unit coupled to said shock absorber, said logic unit configured to send a signal to said remotely controllable preload adjuster, said signal to cause said remotely controllable preload adjuster to partially compress or expand said at least one of said plurality of springs.

10. The shock absorber of claim 9 wherein said remotely controllable preload adjuster comprises:

a piston chamber having a volume, wherein a change to said volume of said piston chamber causes movement of said preload piston relative to said damper.

11. The shock absorber of claim 10 further comprising:

a compressible fluid disposed within said piston chamber.

12. The shock absorber of claim 9 , further comprising:

said preload piston slidably coupled to said remotely controllable preload adjuster, said preload piston further coupled to an exterior surface of said damper, said preload piston comprising:

a first spring axial abutment structure; and

a second spring axial abutment structure;

said at least one of said plurality of springs mounted around said exterior surface of said damper between said first spring axial abutment structure and said second spring axial abutment structure;

wherein said preload piston causes at least one of said plurality of springs to become more compressed or less compressed as said preload piston moves relative to said damper.
