Abstract

The present invention provides a method and system for providing on-site electrical power to a fracturing operation, and an electrically powered fracturing system. Natural gas can be used to drive a turbine generator in the production of electrical power. A scalable, electrically powered fracturing fleet is provided to pump fluids for the fracturing operation, obviating the need for a constant supply of diesel fuel to the site and reducing the site footprint and infrastructure required for the fracturing operation, when compared with conventional systems.

Claims (34)

1. A system for use in delivering pressurized fluid to a wellbore to be fractured, comprising:

a gas-turbine generator configured to be moved from one well site containing a wellbore to another well site containing another wellbore, the generator being further configured to generate and provide about 31 MW at 13,800 volts AC of electrical power to a fracturing system, said fracturing system comprising:

an electric motor electrically connected to the gas-turbine generator;

a variable frequency drive electrically coupled to the electric motor, wherein the variable frequency drive is configured to control a speed of the electric motor;

a first and a second electric powered fracturing pump coupled to the electric motor and configured to be driven by the electric motor and to pump fracturing fluid into a conduit in communication with the wellbore, wherein the first and the second pump are on a single trailer and are configured to be independently replaceable during the fracturing operation; and

at least one electric blending system, at least one control system, and local equipment for a fracturing operation.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the variable frequency drive is configured to be electrically coupled to the gas-turbine generator and provide electric power to the electric motor when the gas-turbine generator is disposed at a remote location relative to the electric motor.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the electric motor is an alternating current (AC) permanent magnet motor capable of operation in the range of up to 1500 revolutions per minute (rpm) and up to 20,000 foot per pounds (ft/lbs) of torque.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the electric motor is capable of operating at 2500 hp during fracturing operations.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein each fluid pump is a high horsepower plunger-style fluid pump having a power rating of at least 2500 hp.

6. The system of claim 1 further comprising an electrical transformer and drive unit that are in electrical communication with the gas-turbine generator.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electric motor, the first fracturing pump, and the second fracturing pump are located on a trailer to be transported to the well site.

8. A system for use in delivering pressurized fluid to a wellbore to be fractured, comprising:

a natural gas-powered dedicated source of electric power generation configured to be moved from one well site containing a wellbore to another well site containing another wellbore, for fracturing operations at the wellbore, the source of electric power generation being configured to generate and provide about 31 MW at 13,800 volts AC of electrical power to a fracturing system, said fracturing system comprising:

an electrical motor electrically connected to the dedicated source of electric power generation;

a variable frequency drive electrically coupled to the electric motor, wherein the variable frequency drive is configured to control a speed of the electric motor;

a first fracturing pump and a second fracturing pump coupled to the electric motor and configured to be driven by the electric motor and to pump fracturing fluid into a conduit in communication with the wellbore, wherein the first fracturing pump and the second fracturing pump are on a single trailer and are independently replaceable during the fracturing operation; and

at least one electric blending system, at least one control system, and local equipment for a fracturing operation.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the variable frequency drive and the electric motor are configured to be electrically coupled to the natural gas-powered dedicated source of electric power generation, and wherein the natural gas-powered dedicated source of power generation is disposed at a remote location relative to the electric motor.

10. The system of claim 8 wherein the electric motor is an alternating current (AC) permanent magnet motor capable of operation in the range of up to 1500 revolutions per minute (rpm) and up to 20,000 foot per pounds (ft/lbs) of torque.

11. The system of claim 8 wherein each fluid pump is a high horsepower plunger-style fluid pump having a power rating of at least 2500 hp.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the electric motor and the first fracturing pump are located on a trailer to be transported to a well site containing the wellbore.

13. A method of delivering pressurized fluid to a wellbore to be fractured, comprising:

providing a gas-turbine generator configured to be moved from one well site containing a wellbore to another well site containing another wellbore wherein the generator is configured to generate and provide about 31 MW at 13,800 volts AC of electrical power to a fracturing system, said fracturing system comprising:

electrically connecting an electric motor to the gas-turbine generator;

providing a variable frequency drive, and electrically coupling said variable frequency drive to the electric motor, wherein the variable frequency drive is configured to control a speed of the electric motor;

providing a first fracturing pump and a second fracturing pump in communication with a wellbore, and configured on a trailer;

connecting the electric motor to the first fracturing pump and second fracturing pump;

configuring the first fracturing pump and the second fracturing pump to be driven by the electric motor to pump fracturing fluid into the wellbore, wherein the first fracturing pump and the second fracturing pump are separately removable during the fracturing operation; and

providing at least one electric blending system, at least one control system, and local equipment for a fracturing operation.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the variable frequency drive is configured to be electrically coupled to the gas-turbine generator and to provide electric power to the electric motor when the gas-turbine generator is disposed at a remote location relative to the electric motor.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the electric motor is an alternating current (AC) permanent magnet motor capable of operation in the range of up to 1500 revolutions per minute (rpm) and up to 20,000 foot per pounds (ft/lbs) of torque.
