Protection Measures for Robotic Electrosurgical Instruments
A sleeve insertion tool includes an elongate cylindrical body having a closed distal end, an open proximal end, and an inner chamber extending from the proximal end toward the distal end. A jaw cavity is defined within the body and extends distally from the inner chamber, and a protective sleeve is receivable within the inner chamber and defines an aperture at a distal end thereof. An end effector with one or more jaw members is receivable within the interior and the one or more jaw members are extendable through the aperture of the protective sleeve and receivable into the jaw cavity.
1 . A sleeve insertion tool, comprising:
an elongate cylindrical body having a closed distal end, an open proximal end, and an inner chamber extending from the proximal end toward the distal end;
a jaw cavity defined within the body and extending distally from the inner chamber; and
a protective sleeve receivable within the inner chamber and defining an aperture at a distal end thereof,
wherein an end effector with one or more jaw members is receivable within the interior and the one or more jaw members are extendable through the aperture of the protective sleeve and receivable into the jaw cavity.
2 . The sleeve insertion tool of claim 1 , wherein the body comprises a material selected from the group consisting of a plastic, a metal, a rubber, an elastomer, silicone, or any combination thereof.
3 . The sleeve insertion tool of claim 1 , further comprising one or more longitudinal slots defined in the body and extending from the proximal end toward the distal end.
4 . The sleeve insertion tool of claim 1 , further comprising a sleeve stop defined within the inner chamber and providing a transition surface between the inner chamber and the jaw cavity.
5 . The sleeve insertion tool of claim 4 , wherein the distal end of the protective sleeve engages the sleeve stop when the protective sleeve is received within the inner chamber.
6 . The sleeve insertion tool of claim 4 , wherein the sleeve stop exhibits an arcuate conical cross-section.
7 . The sleeve insertion tool of claim 1 , further comprising a cap positioned within the jaw cavity.
8 . The sleeve insertion tool of claim 7 , wherein the cap comprises a hemispherical structure.
9 . The sleeve insertion tool of claim 7 , wherein the cap comprises a rigid material selected from the group consisting of a metal, a plastic, a composite material, or any combination thereof.
10 . The sleeve insertion tool of claim 7 , wherein the body is overmolded onto the cap.
11 . A method, comprising:
positioning a sleeve insertion tool proximate a distal end of a surgical tool having an end effector with one or more jaw members, the sleeve insertion tool including:
an elongate cylindrical body having a closed distal end, an open proximal end, and an inner chamber extending from the proximal end toward the distal end; and
a protective sleeve received within the inner chamber;
advancing the sleeve insertion tool over the distal end of the surgical tool whereby the end effector enters the inner chamber and the one or more jaw members protrude through an aperture defined at a distal end of the protective sleeve;
receiving the one or more jaw members in a jaw cavity defined within the body and extending distally from the inner chamber; and
advancing the sleeve insertion tool proximally relative to the surgical tool and thereby locating the protective sleeve in an assembled position on the surgical tool.
12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein advancing the sleeve insertion tool proximally relative to the surgical tool comprises:
applying an opposing radial load on the sleeve insertion tool at or near the proximal end; and
engaging an outer radial surface of the protective sleeve with an inner radial surface of the sleeve insertion tool.
13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:
retracting the sleeve insertion tool distally relative to the surgical tool; and
maintaining the protective sleeve in the assembled position as the sleeve insertion tool retracts distally.
14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the sleeve insertion tool further includes one or more longitudinal slots defined in the body and extending from the proximal end toward the distal end, the method further comprising removing the sleeve insertion tool by peeling the sleeve insertion tool off the distal end of the surgical tool along the one or more longitudinal slots.
15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the sleeve insertion tool further comprises a sleeve stop defined within the inner chamber, the method further comprising engaging the distal end of the protective sleeve against the sleeve stop when the protective sleeve is introduced into the inner chamber.
16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the sleeve insertion tool further comprises a cap positioned within the jaw cavity, the method further comprises engaging the one or more jaw members against the cap while the sleeve insertion tool is advanced proximally relative to the surgical tool.
17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the cap comprises a rigid material selected from the group consisting of a metal, a plastic, a composite material, or any combination thereof.
18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein positioning the sleeve insertion tool proximate the distal end of a surgical tool is preceded by introducing the protective sleeve at least partially into the inner chamber.
19 . The method of claim 11 , wherein positioning the sleeve insertion tool proximate the distal end of a surgical tool is preceded by receiving the sleeve insertion tool with the protective sleeve pre-assembled within the inner chamber.
20 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising protecting a user from accidental cuts caused by the one or more jaw members with the sleeve insertion tool.
