Abstract

Simultaneous transmission on a shared channel by a plurality of collocated radios is provided herein. The two or more radios are collocated with one another and are communicating with two far radios over a pair of long range wireless links. The two or more radios are configured to transmit and receive in synchronization with one another on a same channel. An off-axis response for each of the two or more radios is reduced compared to their on-axis response for improved signal to noise ratio, and the on-axis response the two or more radios are substantially equal to one another.

Claims (42)

1. A method for communications comprising:

transmitting at a frequency first data using a first radio and second data using a second radio, the first radio and the second radio being disposed at a location;

reducing an off-axis response of the first radio relative to an on-axis response of the first radio, the on-axis response of the first radio occurring along a first main axis between the first radio and a first far radio, the off-axis response of the first radio occurring when the first radio experiences first overlapping signals from at least one of the second radio and a second far radio; and

lowering an off-axis response of the second radio relative to an on-axis response of the second radio, the on-axis response of the second radio occurring along a second main axis between the second radio and the second far radio, the off-axis response of the second radio occurring when the second radio experiences second overlapping signals from at least one of the first radio and the first far radio.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

adjusting at least one of a transmit antenna gain and a receive antenna gain of the first radio, such that a first disparate signal strength in the on-axis response of the first radio is compensated for; and

altering at least one of a transmit antenna gain and a receive antenna gain of the second radio, such that a second disparate signal strength in the on-axis response of the second radio is compensated for.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

balancing the on-axis response of the first radio and the on-axis response of the second radio.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

maintaining a first predetermined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between the on-axis response of the first radio and the off-axis response of the first radio; and

keeping a second predetermined SNR between the on-axis response of the second radio and the off-axis response of the second radio.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

synchronizing at least one of a transmit time period and a receive time period for the first radio and the second radio, such that the first radio and the second radio perform at least one of transmit and receive at a same time at the frequency.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the synchronizing comprises:

receiving from the first radio Global Positioning System (GPS) information; and

providing to the second radio the GPS information, the GPS information being used to synchronize the at least one of the transmit time period and the receive time period for the first radio and the second radio.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the synchronizing is performed using a communications network.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

optimizing an angular separation between the first radio and the second radio to limit the off-axis response of the first radio and the off-axis response of the second radio.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first radio and the second radio includes a shroud, the shroud reducing broadcast of off-axis radiation.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first radio and the second radio is a time division duplex radio.

11. A system for communications comprising:

a first radio transmitting first data at a frequency, an off-axis response of the first radio relative to an on-axis response of the first radio being reduced, the on-axis response of the first radio occurring along a first main axis between the first radio and a first far radio, the off-axis response of the first radio occurring when the first radio experiences first overlapping signals from at least one of a second radio and a second far radio; and

the second radio transmitting second data at the frequency, an off-axis response of the second radio relative to an on-axis response of the second radio being lowered, the on-axis response of the second radio occurring along a second main axis between the second radio and the second far radio, the off-axis response of the second radio occurring when the second radio experiences second overlapping signals from at least one of the first radio and the first far radio, the first radio and the second radio being disposed at a location.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

at least one of a transmit antenna gain and a receive antenna gain of the first radio is adjusted, such that a first disparate signal strength in the on-axis response of the first radio is compensated for; and

at least one of a transmit antenna gain and a receive antenna gain of the second radio is altered, such that a second disparate signal strength in the on-axis response of the second radio is compensated for.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the on-axis response of the first radio and the on-axis response of the second radio are balanced.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

a first predetermined signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between the on-axis response of the first radio and the off-axis response of the first radio is maintained; and

a second predetermined SNR between the on-axis response of the second radio and the off-axis response of the second radio is kept.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

at least one of a transmit time period and a receive time period for the first radio and the second radio are synchronized, such that the first radio and the second radio perform at least one of transmit and receive at a same time at the frequency.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the synchronizing comprises:

receiving from the first radio Global Positioning System (GPS) information; and

providing to the second radio the GPS information, the GPS information being used to synchronize the at least one of the transmit time period and the receive time period for the first radio and the second radio.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the synchronizing is performed using a communications network.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein:

an angular separation between the first radio and the second radio is optimized to limit the off-axis response of the first radio and the off-axis response of the second radio.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first radio and the second radio includes a shroud, the shroud reducing broadcast of off-axis radiation.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the first radio and the second radio is a time division duplex radio.
