Abstract

A system for providing real-time always-on location is presented for maintaining the current location of a mobile device, while saving the battery by managing the GPS in a power-saving mode while the device is considered to be stationary. The system also provides a real-time location in an indoor environment where a GPS signal may not be available. Additionally, methods for driving detection are also presented.

Claims (42)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a client of a mobile device, a location update from an embedded positioning system of the mobile device;

determining, by the client, whether a current location of the mobile device is a distinct new location as compared to a last known location of the mobile device by calculating a distance between the current location of the mobile device and the last known location of the mobile device and comparing the calculated distance to a minimum threshold for determining the distinct new location; and

when the client determines that the current location of the mobile device is a distinct new location, sending a location update to a server, by the client, to maintain the current location of the mobile device, thereby reducing server updates from the mobile device, and thus, reducing network traffic and improving battery performance of the mobile device, wherein

the embedded positioning system comprises a power-saving mode optimized for when the client determines that the mobile device is not at a distinct new location, and

when the client determines that the mobile device is not at a distinct new location, the embedded positioning system enters the power-saving mode.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, by the client, whether the mobile device is considered to be driving or in transit; and

when the client determines that the mobile device is driving or in transit:

sending, by the client, a transit message to a server, and

monitoring the current location and speed of the mobile device, by the client.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein when the client detects that the speed of the mobile device has fallen below the speed threshold, and the mobile device is considered to be at an end point of the driving or transit, the method further comprises:

sending the end point to the server, by the client.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the client only sends start and end points of the driving or transit to the server, thereby reducing server updates from the mobile device while driving or in transit, and thus, reducing network traffic and improving battery performance of the mobile device.

5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

determining, by the client, when a heading or the speed of the mobile device changes more than a heading threshold or a speed change threshold, respectively; and

sending a location update to the server, by the client, when the heading threshold or the speed change threshold are exceeded.

6. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

determining, by the client, when street information has likely changed or the current location cannot be interpolated by the server; and

sending the current location to the server, by the client, when the street information has likely changed or the current location cannot be interpolated by the server.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining of whether the current location of the mobile device has changed and is a distinct new location as compared to the last known location comprises:

calculating, by the client of the mobile device, a distance between the new location and the last known location; and

when the distance is greater than a minimum threshold for determining a distinct location, saving the new location as the current location of the mobile device, by the client.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein when the client determines that the mobile device is not at a distinct new location, the method further comprises:

determining, by the client, whether the mobile device is at a favorite location; and

when the mobile device is at the favorite location, sending the favorite location and a status update to the server, by the client.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

waiting for specified time interval and/or event triggers indicating the mobile device may have moved, by the client, before requesting another update from the embedded positioning system.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the client sends location updates to the server only when the current location is a distinct new location as compared to the last known location.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein location coordinates are used to define the current location and the last known location, and to determine whether the minimum threshold has been exceeded.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein geometry information is used to define a specified geometry of a location, and the specified geometry is used to determine whether the minimum threshold has been exceeded.

13. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a client of a mobile device, location updates from multiple mobile positioning systems embedded inside or integrated with the mobile device;

determining, by the client of the mobile device, whether a current location of the mobile device is a distinct new location as compared to a last known location of the mobile device by calculating a distance between the current location of the mobile device and the last known location of the mobile device and comparing the calculated distance to a minimum threshold for determining the distinct new location; and

when the client determines that the current location of the mobile device is a distinct new location, sending a location update to a server, by the client, to maintain the current location of the mobile device, thereby reducing server updates from the mobile device, and thus, reducing network traffic and improving battery performance of the mobile device, wherein

the embedded or integrated mobile positioning systems comprise a power-saving mode optimized for when the client determines that the mobile device is not at a distinct new location, and

when the client determines that the mobile device is not at a distinct new location, the embedded or integrated mobile positioning systems enter the power-saving mode.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein

the mobile positioning systems are configured to facilitate GPS, cellular, WiFi, and indoor positioning methods, and

when the client of the mobile device determines that the mobile device is at an indoor location, the embedded or integrated mobile positioning systems of the mobile device enter the power-saving mode, and WiFi and indoor positioning methods are used to determine changes to the last known location.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

adjusting a positioning method and a frequency of location requests, by the client of the mobile device, based on battery constraints of the mobile device.
