Abstract

An information handling system includes first and second power supplies, and a management controller. The power supplies are configured to operate in a first power mode to supply power to the information handling system and in a second power mode to shut down from supplying power to the information handling system. The management controller is configured in a normal operation mode to set the first power supply to the first power mode and set the second power supply in the second power mode. The management controller is configured in a test operation mode to set the second power supply to the first power mode, to set the first power supply to the second power mode, to determine whether the second power supply is operating within a first limit, and when the second power supply is not operating within the first limit, to provide a first indication that the second power supply is failing.

8. The information handling system of claim 1 , wherein the management controller comprises a Baseboard Management Controller.

9. A method, comprising:

providing, on an information handling system, a first power supply configured to operate in a first power mode to supply power to the information handling system and in a second power mode to shut down from supplying power to the information handling system;

providing, on the information handling system, a second power supply configured to operate in the first power mode and in the second power mode;

in a normal operating mode of the information handling system:

setting, by a management controller of the information handling system, the first power supply to the first power mode;

setting, by the management controller, the second power supply in the second power mode;

determining whether a testing interval to test the first and second power supplies has timed out, wherein the testing interval is determined as:

Interval= f (PS_age_differential,PS_drain)*Standard Interval

where PS_age-differential is a factor that determines a difference in age between the first and second power supplies, PS_drain is a factor determined by an amount of usage of the second power supply, and Standard Interval is a predetermined interval; and

entering a test operation mode when the testing interval has timed out; and

in the test operation mode of the information handling system:

setting the first power supply in the second power mode;

setting, by the management controller, the second power supply to the first power mode;

determining, by the management controller, whether the second power supply is operating within a first limit;

when the second power supply is not operating within the first limit, providing, by the management controller, a first indication that the second power supply is failing; and

when the second power supply is operating within the first limit, setting, by the management controller, the first power supply to the second power mode.
