Abstract

A method, system, and apparatus for temporarily disarming a barrier alarm in a security system. In one embodiment, a method is described, performed by a barrier alarm in communication with a central controller, where the barrier alarm receives a first signal from a user interface on the barrier alarm to disarm the barrier alarm, disables the barrier alarm in response to receiving the indication, and re-arming the barrier alarm upon receipt of a second signal from a sensor that forms part of the barrier alarm.

Claims (29)

1. A method performed by a barrier alarm in communication with a central controller, comprising:

receiving a first signal, by a processor within the barrier alarm from a user interface on the barrier alarm, to disarm the barrier alarm;

transmitting, by the processor via a transmitter coupled to the processor, an indication to the central controller, the indication instructing the central controller to enter a bypass mode relating to the barrier alarm;

receiving a second signal, by the processor, to exit the bypass mode;

transmitting, by the processor via the transmitter, a second indication to the central controller, the second indication instructing the central controller to exit the bypass mode relating to the barrier alarm.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: providing a third signal, by the processor to a status indicator coupled to the processor, indicating that the barrier alarm is in the bypass mode after transmission of the indication.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprises a pushbutton located on the barrier alarm.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the second signal comprises:

monitoring, by the processor, a sensor coupled to the processor; determining, by the processor, whether the sensor signal from the sensor has changed more than a predetermined amount; and

transmitting, by the processor via the transmitter, the second indication when the sensor signal has changed more than the predetermined amount.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the sensor signal comprises an indication of a deceleration of the barrier alarm, and determining whether the sensor signal from the sensor has changed more than the predetermined amount comprises; comparing, by the processor, the sensor signal to a threshold deceleration stored in a memory coupled to the processor; and determining, by the processor, that the sensor signal exceeds the predetermined threshold deceleration.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving the second signal comprises:

monitoring, by the processor, a reed switch coupled to the processor; determining, by the processor, whether the reed switch coupled to the processor has changed state; and

transmitting, by the processor via the transmitter, the second indication when the reed switch changes state.

7. A barrier alarm having a bypass capability, the barrier alarm in communication with a central controller, comprising:

a sensor for detecting when a barrier monitored by the barrier alarm is in a first position;

a user input device for receiving an indication from a user to bypass the barrier alarm;

a memory for storing processor-executable instructions;

a transmitter; and

a processor coupled to the sensor, the user input device, the memory and the transmitter, for executing the processor-executable instructions that causes the barrier alarm to:

receive a first signal, by the processor from the user input device, to disarm the barrier alarm;

transmit, by the processor via the transmitter, the indication to the central controller, the indication instructing the central controller to enter a bypass mode relating to the barrier alarm;

receive a second signal, by the processor, to exit the bypass mode;

transmit, by the processor via the transmitter, a second indication to the central controller, the second indication instructing the central controller to exit the bypass mode relating to the barrier alarm.

8. The barrier alarm of claim 7 , further comprising a status indicator coupled to the processor, wherein the processor-executable instructions further comprise instructions for the barrier alarm to; provide a third signal, by the processor to the status indicator, indicating that the barrier alarm is in the bypass mode after transmission of the indication.

9. The barrier alarm of claim 7 , wherein the user input device comprises a pushbutton located on the barrier alarm.

10. The barrier alarm of claim 7 , wherein the processor-executable instructions that cause the barrier alarm to receive the second signal comprises instructions that cause the barrier alarm to: monitor, by the processor, the sensor coupled to the processor; determine, by the processor, whether a sensor signal from the sensor has changed more than a predetermined amount; and transmit, by the processor via the transmitter, the second indication when the sensor signal has changed more than the predetermined amount.

11. The barrier alarm of claim 10 , wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer, and the sensor signal comprises information indicative of a deceleration of the barrier alarm, and the processor-executable instructions that cause the barrier alarm to determine whether the sensor signal from the sensor has changed more than the predetermined amount comprises instructions that cause the barrier alarm to: compare, by the processor, the sensor signal to a threshold deceleration stored in the memory; and determine, by the processor, that the sensor signal exceeds the threshold deceleration.

12. The barrier alarm of claim 7 , wherein the sensor comprises a reed switch, and wherein the processor-executable instructions that cause the barrier alarm to receive the second signal comprises instructions that cause the barrier alarm to: monitor, by the processor, the reed switch; determine, by the processor, whether the reed switch has changed state; and transmit, by the processor via the transmitter, the second indication when the reed switch changes state.
