Abstract

Devices for the treatment of vascular aneurysms are described. The treatment is achieved through the delivery of an effective amount of elastin stabilization agent to an isolated volume at the aneurysm. The elastin stabilization agent maybe embedded in a delivery composition. The device optionally has an aspiration means to improve the effectiveness of the treatment.

21 . A device for treating an isolated volume in a blood vessel, the device comprising:

a shaft comprising a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending from at or near the proximal end to at or near the distal end, wherein the lumen connects with a port at its proximal end;

a proximal extendable balloon positioned on the shaft;

a distal extendable balloon positioned on the shaft distally to the proximal extendable balloon; and

a fluid exchange port disposed on a side of one of the proximal and distal extendable balloons and in fluid communication with the lumen for delivering a therapeutic composition introduced into the lumen from the port to the isolated volume of the blood vessel,

wherein the proximal and distal extendable balloons have a lower profile configurations and extended configurations having shapes configured to push against the blood vessel wall to fluidly seal the blood vessel and form the isolated volume between the proximal and distal extendable balloons, and

wherein the fluid exchange port is positioned to be in fluid communication with the isolated volume when the proximal and distal extendable balloons are in an extended configuration.

22 . The device of claim 21 , wherein the lumen is configured to provide fluid to extend at least one of the proximal and distal extendable balloons.

The device of claim 22 , wherein the device is configured to slowly leak the therapeutic composition into the isolated volume while maintaining pressure in the at least one of the proximal and distal extendable balloons to keep the at least one of the proximal and distal extendable balloons in an extended configuration.

24 . The device of claim 21 , further comprising a blood by-pass channel extending through the proximal extendable balloon and the distal extendable balloon such that blood flow is configured to bypass the isolated volume.

25 . The device of claim 24 , wherein the blood by-pass channel is configured to receive a guidewire.

26 . The device of claim 21 , further comprising a rapid exchange guidewire lumen having a port at a distal end of the shaft.

27 . The device of claim 21 , further comprising a tubular conduit displaced from the shaft and forming the fluid exchange port.

28 . The device of claim 21 , further comprising a second lumen configured to provide fluid for extending at least one of the proximal and distal extendable balloons.

29 . The device of claim 21 , further comprising a second lumen configured to be placed in fluid communication with the isolated volume to aspirate fluid from the isolated volume.

30 . The device of claim 29 , further comprising an aspiration device coupled to a proximal end of the second lumen.

31 . The device of claim 21 , further comprising a delivery element coupled to the port at the proximal end of the lumen for delivering the therapeutic composition into the lumen.

32 . The device of claim 31 , wherein the delivery element comprises a therapeutic composition configured to stabilize tissue of the blood vessel.

33 . The device of claim 32 , wherein the therapeutic composition comprises pentagalloyl glucose (PGG).

34 . The device of claim 32 , wherein the therapeutic composition comprises glutaraldehyde.

35 . The device of claim 21 , wherein the lumen is configured to collapse under a level of aspiration pressure applied to the lumen.

36 . The device of claim 21 , wherein a distal end of the proximal extendable balloon is joined to a proximal end of the distal extendable balloon.

37 . The device of claim 35 , wherein the proximal extendable balloon and the distal extendable balloon form a smooth continuous surface that defines a boundary of the isolated volume.

38 . The device of claim 21 , wherein the proximal extendable balloon and the distal extendable balloon are configured to be extended by fluid provided from a single lumen.

39 . The device of claim 21 , wherein the proximal extendable balloon has an asymmetric shape in an extended configuration in which a proximal portion of the proximal extendable balloon is further extended than a distal portion of the proximal extendable balloon.

40 . The device of claim 21 , wherein the distal extendable balloon has an asymmetric shape in an extended configuration in which a distal portion of the distal extendable balloon is further extended than a proximal portion of the distal extendable balloon.
