Abstract

A light source emits a modulated light, and a radio-frequency transceiver disposed therewith emits a radio-frequency signal. A mobile device may receive either or both signals and determine its position based thereon. The light and radio-frequency sources may be disposed in node in a network of said sources, and the nodes may communicate via the radio-frequency transceivers.

Claims (65)

1. A lighting device comprising:

an antenna;

a radio frequency (RF) transceiver coupled to the antenna and configured to receive, via the antenna, RF signals from an RF communication enabled device

a light source configured to emit light for illumination;

estimating the position of the RF communication enabled device includes transmitting the received signal strength measurement with an identifier of the lighting device to a position estimation server via the RF transceiver.

4. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein:

the lighting device is a node in a network of RF communication enabled devices; and

the RF communication enabled device is another lighting device coupled to the network as a network node.

5. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein:

the RF signals received from the RF communication enabled device correspond to a standard compliant advertising packet; and

the standard compliant advertising packet includes an RF communication enabled device identifier.

6. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the lighting device is further configured to communicate via visible light communication.

7. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein determining the angle of arrival measurement includes detecting a phase difference of the RF signals on elements of the antenna.

8. The lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the antenna includes at least one of:

a directional antenna;

a fixed directional antenna;

a mechanically steered antenna; or

a phased array antenna.

9. A method comprising:

receiving, via a radio frequency (RF) transceiver coupled to an antenna of a lighting device, RF signals transmitted from an RF communication enabled device;

determining, via the RF transceiver of the lighting device, an angle of arrival measurement, of the received RF signals from the RF communication enabled device;

based on, at least, the angle of arrival measurement, estimating a position of the RF communication enabled device.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein estimating the position of the RF communication enabled device includes:

transmitting the determined angle of arrival measurement with an identifier of the lighting device to a position estimation server via the RF transceiver.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

measuring a received signal strength of the RF signals received from the RF communication enabled device; and

wherein estimating the position of the RF communication enabled device includes transmitting the received signal strength measurement with an identifier of the lighting device to a position estimation server via the RF transceiver.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein:

the lighting device is a node in a network of RF communication enabled devices; and

the RF communication enabled device is another lighting device coupled to the network as a network node.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein:

the RF signals received from the RF communication enabled device correspond to a standard compliant advertising packet; and

the standard compliant advertising packet includes an RF communication enabled device identifier.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the lighting device is further configured to communicate via visible light communication.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein determining the angle of arrival measurement includes detecting a phase difference of the RF signals on elements of the antenna.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein the antenna includes at least one of:

a directional antenna;

a fixed directional antenna;

a mechanically steered antenna; or

a phased array antenna.
