Abstract

In a first aspect, a method for monitoring a golf swing is provided that includes coupling a mobile telephone to a golf club and employing the mobile telephone coupled to the golf club to monitor acceleration of the mobile telephone as the mobile telephone swings while a user swings the golf club, collect acceleration information based on the monitored acceleration of the mobile telephone as the mobile telephone swings, analyze the collected acceleration information to determine one or more characteristics of the golf swing based on the collected acceleration information, and output information regarding the one or more characteristics of the golf swing on the display of the mobile telephone. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Claims (31)

1. A system for monitoring a golf swing comprising:

a mobile telephone having one or more accelerometers and a program stored therein that when executed by the mobile telephone causes the mobile telephone to:

monitor acceleration of the mobile telephone as the mobile telephone swings;

collect acceleration information based on the monitored acceleration of the mobile telephone;

analyze the collected acceleration information to determine one or more characteristics of a golf swing based on the collected acceleration information; and

output information regarding the one or more characteristics of the golf swing,

wherein the mobile telephone is configured to couple to a golf club.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile telephone comprises a display and wherein the program causes information regarding the one or more characteristics of the golf swing to be output on the display.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile telephone includes a display and wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to generate a map of a golf course.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to predict ball travel distance.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to predict ball position.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to present graphical representations of stored swings.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to overlay graphical representations of swings.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to graphically display swing information over a reference swing.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to create a virtual golf game.

10. An application executable on a mobile telephone comprising:

a program configured to be stored in the mobile telephone and that when executed by the mobile telephone causes the mobile telephone to:

monitor acceleration of the mobile telephone as the mobile telephone swings using one or more accelerometers of the mobile telephone;

collect acceleration information based on the monitored acceleration of the mobile telephone;

analyze collected acceleration information to determine one or more characteristics of a golf swing; and

output information regarding the one or more characteristics of the golf swing.

11. The application of claim 10 , wherein the mobile telephone is configured to mount to a wrist of a user who swings a golf club.

12. The application of claim 10 , wherein the mobile telephone includes a display and wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to generate a map of a golf course.

13. The application of claim 10 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to predict ball travel distance.

14. The application of claim 10 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to predict ball position.

15. The application of claim 10 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to present graphical representations of stored swings.

16. The application of claim 10 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to overlay graphical representations of swings.

17. The application of claim 10 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to graphically display swing information over a reference swing.

18. The application of claim 10 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to create a virtual golf game.

19. The application of claim 18 , wherein the program calculates where a user hits a ball in a virtual golf course in the virtual golf game.

20. The application of claim 18 , wherein the program causes the mobile telephone to display a golf course in the virtual golf game.
