Abstract

A slit lamp device for use in an ophthalmoscope includes one or more light sources for providing a light path comprised of one or more beams of: visible light and infrared (IR) light; a slit lamp control mechanism along the light path for receiving the one or more light beams and forming the one or more light beams into a slit light beam; the slit lamp control mechanism further controlling the width of the formed slit light beam; a first, narrow slit passes visible light through the slit control mechanism and a second, wider slit passes IR light though the slit control mechanism.

Claims (23)

1. A slit lamp device for use in an ophthalmoscope comprising:

one or more light sources for providing a light along a light path comprised of one or more beams of: visible light and infrared (IR) light;

a slit lamp control mechanism along the light path having a slit opening for receiving the one or more light beams and forming the one or more light beams into a one or more slit light beams;

wherein a first, narrow slit passes visible light through the slit control mechanism and a second, co-planar and wider slit passes IR light through the slit control mechanism; and,

wherein the second, wider slit to pass an IR light beam is enabled by one or more long pass filters mounted co-planar with the first, narrow slit.

2. The slit lamp of claim 1 , wherein the beams of visible light and IR light are provided by one of: one light source with both IR and visible light components or separate light sources.

3. The slit lamp of claim 1 , wherein the first, narrow slit and the second, wider slit overlap in their position in the slit control mechanism.

4. The slit lamp device of claim 1 , further comprising a mechanism to change the width of one or more of the first slit and the second slit, so as to adjust the width of the formed slit light beam.

5. A slit lamp comprising:

a first light source, wherein the first light source produces visible light;

a second light source, wherein the second light source produces IR light;

a first slit configured to pass visible light from the first light source;

a second slit co-planar with the first slit configured to pass IR light from the second light source; and,

wherein the first slit is smaller in width than the second slit and overlaps the second slit.

6. The slit lamp of claim 5 , wherein the first and the second light sources are a single light source producing both visible and IR light.

7. The slit lamp of claim 5 , further comprising a mechanism to change the width of one or more of the first slit and the second slit so as to change the width of a formed slit light beam.

8. A method of obtaining two images of a retina of an eye comprising:

providing the slit lamp of claim 5 ;

activating the first light source to provide a field of view of the retina using visible light;

activating the second light source to provide a field of view of the retina using IR light; and,

wherein the first field of view of the retina using visible light is narrower than the field of view of the retina using IR light.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first light source and the second light source are activated one of sequentially or simultaneously.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the field of view from the first light source overlaps the field of view of the second light source when the first light source and the second light source are activated simultaneously.
