Abstract

Devices for treating mitral valve regurgitation, including a distal expandable anchor, a proximal expandable anchor, and a fixed length connecting member extending from the proximal expandable anchor to the distal expandable anchor, where at least one of the proximal and distal anchors includes first and second arm segments that extend from one end of the device toward the connecting member and the other anchor when in a collapsed delivery configuration, and where the at least one of the proximal and distal anchors that comprises the first and second arm segments has an expanded configuration in which the first and second arm segments extend radially outwardly such that the first and second arm segments extend away from one another toward the connector, and meet one another at a location axially spaced from the end of the device.

Claims (14)

1. A method of orienting an intraluminal cardiac device within the coronary sinus for the treatment of mitral valve regurgitation, the method comprising:

advancing an intraluminal cardiac device in a collapsed configuration into a coronary sinus having a lumen wall including an inner wall region and an outer wall region radially outward from the inner wall region, the intraluminal cardiac device comprising a proximal end, a distal end, a first expandable anchor, a second expandable anchor, and a connecting member extending between the first and second expandable anchors, wherein an axis extends between the distal and proximal ends and along the connecting member;

expanding the first expandable anchor within the coronary sinus;

anchoring the first expandable anchor against movement in the coronary sinus;

deploying the connecting member;

pulling proximally on the intraluminal cardiac device so as to change the geometry of the mitral valve annulus and bring the leaflets of the mitral valve closer together, thereby reducing undesirable blood flow regurgitation back through the mitral valve during the heart cycle;

expanding the second expandable anchor within the coronary sinus; and

anchoring the second expandable anchor against movement in the coronary sinus after the pulling step,

wherein expanding the first expandable anchor comprises moving an apex of the first expandable anchor, relative to the connecting member, radially outward and away from the connecting member and away from the inner wall region, the anchor apex being disposed in an anchor portion that is spaced radially furthest away from the axis, and

wherein expanding the second expandable anchor comprises moving an apex of the second expandable anchor, relative to the connecting member, radially outward and away from the connecting member and away from the inner wall region, the anchor apex being disposed in an anchor portion that is spaced radially furthest away from the axis.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first expandable anchor is a distal expandable anchor, and wherein anchoring the distal expandable anchor against movement in the coronary sinus comprises anchoring the distal anchor such that the apex of the distal expandable anchor contacts the outer wall region.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein expanding the distal anchor further comprises causing first and second arm segments of the distal anchor to expand radially outward and into contact with the outer wall region.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the second expandable anchor is a proximal anchor, and wherein anchoring the proximal expandable anchor against movement in the coronary sinus comprises anchoring the proximal anchor such that the apex of the proximal expandable anchor contacts the outer wall region.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein expanding the proximal anchor further comprises causing first and second arm segments of the proximal anchor to expand radially outward and into contact with the outer wall region.
