Abstract

A reduced pressure treatment apparatus includes a charging chamber storing a first pressure less than an ambient pressure and a regulated chamber storing a second pressure less than the ambient pressure. The first pressure is less than the second pressure. A conduit provides fluid communication between the regulated chamber and the charging chamber. A regulator member is operably associated with the conduit to prevent fluid communication through the conduit when the second pressure is less than or equal to a desired therapy pressure and to allow fluid communication through the conduit when the second pressure exceeds the desired therapy pressure.

Claims (36)

1. A reduced-pressure pump, comprising:

a first barrel having a passage;

a second barrel received by the passage of the first barrel;

a charging chamber within the passage;

a regulated chamber within the passage;

a regulator passage between the charging chamber and the regulated chamber; and

a valve body operably associated with the regulator passage to regulate fluid communication between the charging chamber and the regulated chamber through the passage based on a differential between ambient pressure and pressure in the regulated chamber.

2. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 1 , wherein the second barrel is slidingly received by the passage of the first barrel.

3. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 1 , further comprising a regulator spring operably associated with the valve body to bias the valve body toward an open position.

4. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 1 , further comprising a piston movably disposed within the regulator passage between the charging chamber and the regulated chamber.

5. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 4 , wherein the regulator passage is disposed within the piston.

6. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 4 , wherein the regulated chamber is defined within the piston.

7. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 4 , wherein the piston comprises:

an outer wall;

an inner wall;

an outer floor joining the outer wall and the inner wall;

an annulus between the outer wall and the inner wall; and

a plurality of radial supports positioned between the outer wall and the inner wall in the annulus.

8. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 4 , further comprising a seal disposed between the second barrel and the piston.

9. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 8 , wherein the valve body is coupled to the seal.

10. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 8 , wherein the regulated chamber is defined between the seal and the piston.

11. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 8 , wherein:

the regulated chamber is defined between the seal and the piston; and

the valve body is coupled to the seal.

12. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 8 , wherein:

the regulated chamber is defined between the seal and the piston;

the valve body is coupled to the seal; and

the seal is configured to allow fluid to exit the charging chamber if the second barrel is compressed within the first barrel.

13. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 8 , wherein:

the valve body and the seal are an elastomeric material;

the regulated chamber is defined between the seal and the piston;

the valve body is coupled to the seal; and

the seal is configured to allow fluid to exit the charging chamber if the second barrel is compressed within the first barrel.

14. The reduced-pressure pump of claim 8 , wherein:

the piston comprises an inner bowl; and

the regulated chamber is defined by the inner bowl and the seal.
