Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to gaming devices and methods for implementing mystery bonus results in place of base game results on a gaming display. The gaming device comprises a base game having a base game display. A random number generator is optionally operable with the base game to obtain a base game result, and the base game display operative to display the base game result. A base game pay table is tied to the base game result and includes winning outcomes and non-winning outcomes. A bonus game award mechanism is configured to determine a threshold tied to a bonus result, track play of the base game, advance a counter responsive to play at the base game, display the bonus result at the base game display in place of the base game result when the counter bears a predefined relationship with the threshold, and award a bonus to a player.

Claims (69)

1. A method comprising:

facilitating, by an electronic gaming machine, play of a base game on the electronic gaming machine;

establishing, by an accepting device configured to interact with a player of the electronic gaming machine, a credit balance associated with the player that is decreasable based on at least wagering activity;

generating a plurality of possible winning base game outcomes and at least one non-winning base game outcome;

monitoring a plurality of plays of the base game played on the electronic gaming machine;

incrementing a count responsive to the plurality of plays of the base game;

comparing the incremented count to a randomly generated trigger threshold;

based on the incremented count satisfying the randomly generated trigger threshold, displaying a winning base game outcome;

associating a non-winning base game outcome count with the at least one non-winning base game outcome;

incrementing the non-winning base game outcome count responsive to play of the base game;

comparing the non-winning base game outcome count with a non-winning base game outcome count trigger threshold; and

displaying the at least one non-winning base game outcome on a display device when the non-winning base game outcome count bears a predefined relationship to the non-winning base game outcome trigger threshold.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a player identifier associated with the player.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein displaying the at least one non-winning base game outcome on the display device comprises displaying a plurality of symbols that differ from the plurality of possible of the winning base game outcomes by only a single symbol.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing the count and one or more trigger thresholds in a memory coupled over a network to the electronic gaming machine;

allowing play on a second electronic gaming machine by the player, the second electronic gaming machine coupled to a memory device associated with the electronic gaming machine via the network; and

incrementing the count responsive to play on the second electronic gaming machine.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein monitoring and incrementing occur within the electronic gaming machine facilitating the base game.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein monitoring and incrementing occur external to the electronic gaming machine.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the randomly generated trigger threshold is associated with one or more predefined ranges of counts.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises selecting the at least one non-winning base game outcome responsive to incrementing a count toward a randomly selected trigger threshold within a range of counts.

9. An electronic gaming machine comprising:

a non-transitory memory device configured to store computer-readable instructions to facilitate play of a base game on the electronic gaming machine, including generating a plurality of possible winning base game outcomes and at least one non-winning base game outcome;

a display device for displaying different combinations of symbols indicating one or more outcomes of base games played on the electronic gaming machine;

an accepting device configured to interact with a player of the electronic gaming machine to establish a credit balance that is decreasable based on at least wagering activity;

a cashout device operative to redeem the credit balance by at least one of a ticket printer, a coin hopper, a currency dispenser, or an electronic account to which value is transferred; and

at least one computing processor configured to execute computer readable program code to implement a method comprising:

monitoring a plurality of plays of the base game;

incrementing a count responsive to each play of the plurality of plays of the base game;

comparing the incremented count to a randomly generated trigger threshold;

based on the incremented count satisfying the randomly generated trigger threshold, displaying a winning base game outcome;

associating a non-winning base game outcome count with the at least one non-winning base game outcome;

incrementing the non-winning base game outcome count responsive to play of the base game;

comparing the non-winning base game outcome count with a non-winning base game outcome count trigger threshold; and

displaying the at least one non-winning base game outcome on the display device when the non-winning base game outcome count bears a predefined relationship to the non-winning base game outcome trigger threshold.

10. An electronic gaming machine comprising:

a non-transitory memory device configured to store computer-readable instructions to facilitate play of a base game on the electronic gaming machine, including generating a plurality of possible winning base game outcomes and at least one non-winning base game outcome;

a display device for displaying different combinations of symbols indicating one or more outcomes of base games played on the electronic gaming machine;

an accepting device configured to interact with a player of the electronic gaming machine to establish a credit balance that is decreasable based on at least wagering activity;

a cashout device operative to redeem the credit balance by at least one of a ticket printer, a coin hopper, a currency dispenser, or an electronic account to which value is transferred; and

at least one computing processor configured to execute computer readable program code to implement a method comprising:

monitoring a plurality of plays of a base game;

incrementing a count responsive to each play of the plurality of plays of the base game;

comparing the incremented count to a randomly generated trigger threshold;

based on the incremented count satisfying the randomly generated trigger threshold, displaying a winning base game outcome;

associating a non-winning base game outcome count with the at least one non-winning base game outcome;

incrementing the non-winning base game outcome count responsive to play of the base game;

comparing the non-winning base game outcome count with a non-winning base game outcome count trigger threshold; and

displaying the at least one non-winning base game outcome on the display device when the non-winning base game outcome count bears a predefined relationship to the non-winning base game outcome count trigger threshold, wherein the non-winning base game outcome count is associated with the non-winning base game outcome count trigger threshold.

11. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium on which is recorded computer executable instructions that, when executed by one or more hardware processors, cause the one or more hardware processors to execute a method comprising:

monitoring a plurality of plays of a base game on an electronic gaming machine, the base game having a plurality of winning base game outcomes;

incrementing a count responsive to play of the base game;

comparing the incremented count to a randomly generated trigger threshold;

based on the incremented count satisfying the randomly generated trigger threshold, displaying a winning base game outcome on a display device of the electronic gaming machine;

associating a non-winning base game outcome count with at least one non-winning base game outcome;

incrementing the non-winning base game outcome count responsive to play of the base game;

comparing the non-winning base game outcome count with a non-winning base game outcome count trigger threshold; and

displaying the non-winning base game outcome on one or more game indicia locations of the base game when the non-winning base game outcome count bears a predefined relationship to the non-winning base game outcome count trigger threshold.

12. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium on which is recorded computer executable instructions that, when executed by one or more hardware processors, cause the one or more hardware processors to execute a method comprising:

monitoring a plurality of plays of a base game on an electronic gaming machine, the base game having a plurality of winning base game base game outcomes;

incrementing a count responsive to play of the base game;

comparing the incremented count to a randomly generated trigger threshold;

based on the incremented count satisfying the randomly generated trigger threshold, displaying a winning base game outcome on a display device of the electronic gaming machine;

associating a non-winning base game outcome count with at least one non-winning base game outcome;

incrementing the non-winning base game outcome count responsive to play of the base game;
