Abstract

Systems and methods for incorporating online user generated media content (e.g., videos) into an interactive video gaming environment are provided. Media assets that are associated with different measures of quality generated by users are stored on a remote server. A player action is received by the remote server. A determination is made as to which one of the plurality of levels of the interactive video gaming environment corresponds to the action. One of the videos associated with one of the measures of quality is selected based on the determination of the level corresponding to the action. The selected video is transmitted to the player.

Claims (42)

1. A method for providing supplemental content in 3D interactive video gaming environments, the method comprising:

generating, by processing circuitry, a display of a 3D interactive video gaming environment;

identifying a subset of a plurality of videos, stored on a storage device, the plurality of videos having been provided by a plurality of other users;

selecting, by the processing circuitry, a video of the subset of the plurality of videos for display;

determining a position between a user and a background object in the 3D interactive video gaming environment; and

generating for display the video at the position.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

downloading the 3D interactive video gaming environment from a first source; and

executing the 3D interactive video gaming environment on a user equipment device comprising the processing circuitry and the storage device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the storage device is a remote server, and wherein identifying the subset of the plurality of videos comprises searching the remote server for content associated with the 3D interactive video gaming environment provided by the plurality of other users.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retrieving, from the storage device, user profile information that indicates a first measure of progress of the user in the interactive application.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein each of the subset of the plurality of videos is associated with a different measure of progress in the interactive application.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

identifying a predetermined level of quality associated with the video;

determining that the identified predetermined level of quality corresponds to the first measure of progress of the user; and

in response to determining that the identified predetermined level of quality corresponds to the first measure of progress of the user, associating the video with the first measure of progress of the user, wherein the selecting comprises selecting the video in response to associating the video with the first measure of progress of the user.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the first measure of progress of the user is determined based on a response from the user to an inquiry generated during user interaction with the 3D interactive video gaming environment, an indication that the user completed a segment of the 3D interactive video gaming environment, or an indication that the user reached or failed to reach a segment of the 3D interactive video gaming environment.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the 3D interactive video gaming environment comprises a plurality of measures of progress, wherein each measure of progress of the plurality of measures of progress is associated with a different level of difficulty.

9. The method of claim 4 , wherein the determining the first measure of progress of the user in the interactive application is based on a data structure that associates a current position of the user in the 3D interactive video gaming environment with one of the plurality of measures of progress.

10. The method of claim 4 , further comprising searching, based on the first measure of progress of the user, the different measures of progress associated with the subset of the plurality of videos to identify the video of the subset of the plurality of videos as associated with a given measure of progress that matches the first measure of progress of the user.

11. A system for providing supplemental content in 3D interactive video gaming environments, the system comprising:

storage circuitry configured to store a plurality of videos, the plurality of videos having been provided by a plurality of other users; and

processing circuitry configured to:

generate a display of a 3D interactive video gaming environment;

identify a subset of a plurality of videos, stored on a storage device, the plurality of videos having been provided by a plurality of other users;

select a video of the subset of the plurality of videos for display;

determine a position between a user and a background object in the 3D interactive video gaming environment; and

generate for display the video at the position.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

download the 3D interactive video gaming environment from a first source; and

execute the 3D interactive video gaming environment on a user equipment device comprising the processing circuitry and the storage device.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the storage device is a remote server, and wherein identifying the subset of the plurality of videos comprises searching the remote server for content associated with the 3D interactive video gaming environment provided by the plurality of other users.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to retrieve, from the storage device, user profile information that indicates a first measure of progress of the user in the interactive application.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein each of the subset of the plurality of videos is associated with a different measure of progress in the interactive application.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

identify a predetermined level of quality associated with the video;

determine that the identified predetermined level of quality corresponds to the first measure of progress of the user; and

in response to determining that the identified predetermined level of quality corresponds to the first measure of progress of the user, associate the video with the first measure of progress of the user, wherein the selecting comprises selecting the video in response to associating the video with the first measure of progress of the user.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the first measure of progress of the user is determined based on a response from the user to an inquiry generated during user interaction with the 3D interactive video gaming environment, an indication that the user completed a segment of the 3D interactive video gaming environment, or an indication that the user reached or failed to reach a segment of the 3D interactive video gaming environment.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein the 3D interactive video gaming environment comprises a plurality of measures of progress, wherein each measure of progress of the plurality of measures of progress is associated with a different level of difficulty.

19. The system of claim 14 , wherein the determining the first measure of progress of the user in the interactive application is based on a data structure that associates a current position of the user in the 3D interactive video gaming environment with one of the plurality of measures of progress.

20. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to search, based on the first measure of progress of the user, the different measures of progress associated with the subset of the plurality of videos to identify the video of the subset of the plurality of videos as associated with a given measure of progress that matches the first measure of progress of the user.
