Abstract

An apparatus and method for protecting a person servicing a longwall shear such changing bits on a drum, embodiments relating to a base plate to be secured to an underside of a shield canopy and a slide plate movably connected to the underside of the base plate such that the slide plate can advance out from the shield canopy to allow a person to service a longwall shear while being protected by the slide plate from falling rock and other debris, and the slide plate can then retract back under the shield canopy.

Claims (26)

1. An apparatus for protecting a person servicing a longwall shear from falling rock and debris, the apparatus comprising:

a base plate secured to an underside of a shield canopy, the base plate comprising an underside and two sides, each of the two sides comprising a plurality of guides;

a slide plate movably secured to the underside of the base plate, the slide plate comprising a front end and a back end with a void extending from the back end, the slide plate slidable along the plurality of guides of the base plate between positions out from, and back under, the underside of the shield canopy; and

an actuator connected to the slide plate at a first actuator end and connected to the base plate at a second actuator end, the actuator disposed at least partially within the slide plate void, the actuator coupled to the slide plate in the slide plate void and the slide plate slidable by way of the actuator, the void in the back end of the slide plate shaped, at least in part, as a triangle, but with one corner beveled, the actuator secured to the slide plate adjacent to the beveled corner.

2. An apparatus for protecting a person servicing a longwall shear from falling rock and debris, the apparatus comprising:

a base plate secured to an underside of a shield canopy, the base plate comprising an underside and two sides, each of the two sides comprising a plurality of guides, the base plate further comprising a plurality of hooks that extend into different holes in the underside of the shield canopy to secure, at least in part, the base plate to the shield canopy;

a slide plate movably secured to the underside of the base plate, the slide plate comprising a front end and a back end with a void extending from the back end, the slide plate slidable along the plurality of guides of the base plate between positions out from, and back under, the underside of the shield canopy; and

an actuator connected to the slide plate at a first actuator end and connected to the base plate at a second actuator end, the actuator disposed at least partially within the slide plate void.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , the base plate further comprising a plurality of threaded bolt blocks extending into different of other holes on the underside of the shield canopy to secure, at least in part, the base plate to the shield canopy.

4. An apparatus for protecting a person servicing a longwall shear, the apparatus comprising:

a shield canopy comprising a plurality of holes;

a base plate comprising:

a plurality of connectors to extend into the plurality of holes to secure the base plate to the shield canopy; and

at least four guides;

a slide plate comprising:

a front end;

a back end;

a void in the back end that narrows as it extends partway towards the front end, the void having a periphery; and

an underside, the underside slidable along the at least four guides of the base plate such that the front end of the slide plate is slidable out from under, and back under, the shield canopy; and

an actuator connected to the slide plate adjacent to the periphery of the void of the slide plate at a first end and connected to the base plate at a second end, the actuator disposed at least partially within the void; and

wherein:

the at least four guides of the base plate extend at least partially around the slide plate to movably secure, at least in part, the slide plate to the base plate.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein:

the plurality of holes of the shield canopy comprise at least six holes; and

the plurality of connectors of the base plate comprise at least four hooks and at least two threaded bolt blocks, the at least four hooks and the at least two threaded bolt blocks to each extend into a different one of the at least six holes of the shield canopy to secure the base plate to the shield canopy.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 , the slide plate further comprising a framework, the framework disposed on the underside.
