Abstract

A power and optical fiber interface system includes a housing having an interior. A cable inlet is configured to receive a hybrid cable having an electrical conductor and an optical fiber. An insulation displacement connector (IDC) is situated in the interior of the housing configured to electrically terminate the conductor, and a cable outlet is configured to receive an output cable that is connectable to the IDC and configured to output signals received via the optical fiber.

a first cable port connected to the body and configured to receive a hybrid cable that includes at least one optical fiber for transmitting an optical signal and electrical conductors for carrying power;

a second cable port connected to the body and configured to receive an Ethernet cable having twisted pair conductors; and

electrical power management circuitry positioned within the interior of the body and connected to the first and second cable ports, the electrical power management circuitry configured to be coupled between the electrical conductors of the hybrid cable and the twisted pair conductors of the Ethernet cable, the electrical power management circuitry having a DC-to-DC voltage converter for raising the voltage received from the hybrid cable to compensate for voltage loss over a length of the hybrid cable and to output a desired voltage level to the Ethernet cable; and

optical-to-electrical conversion circuitry connected to the first and second cable ports and configured to be coupled between the at least one optical fiber of the hybrid cable and the twisted pair conductors of the Ethernet cable, the optical-to-electrical conversion circuitry being configured to convert the optical signal from the hybrid cable into an electrical signal that is transmitted to the twisted pair conductors of the Ethernet cable.

2. The powered fiber optic system of claim 1 , further comprising circuit protection circuitry in the interior of the body for providing current surge protection.

3. The powered fiber optic system of claim 2 , wherein the circuit protection circuitry provides primary, secondary and tertiary protection.

4. The powered fiber optic system of claim 2 , wherein the circuit protection circuitry includes a transient voltage suppression diode.

5. The powered fiber optic system of claim 1 , further comprising a clamp connected to the body and configured to fix the hybrid input cable and the Ethernet cable to the body at the first and second cable ports.

6. The powered fiber optic system of claim 1 , further comprising an insulation displacement connector (IDC) situated in the interior of the body for connecting the electrical conductors of the hybrid cable to the interface device.

7. The powered fiber optic system of claim 6 , wherein the IDC includes a housing with first and second conductor grooves positioned on either side of a fiber pass-through groove, wherein the first and second conductor grooves are configured to receive the electrical conductors of the hybrid cable and the fiber pass-through groove is configured to receive the at least one optical fiber.

8. The powered fiber optic system of claim 7 , further comprising a plurality of insulator clamping ribs situated in the interior of the body and configured to press against a jacket of the hybrid cable to hold the hybrid cable in place.

9. The powered fiber optic system of claim 7 , wherein the IDC includes IDC terminals and a cover hingedly connected to the housing that when closed presses the IDC terminals through a jacket of the hybrid cable to make an electrical connection with the conductors of the hybrid cable.

10. The powered fiber optic system of claim 9 , wherein the IDC terminals are angled to provide a gas-tight connection with the conductors of the hybrid cable.

11. The powered fiber optic system of claim 9 , wherein the IDC housing is configured such that the conductors of the hybrid cable extend beyond the IDC terminals but remain within the IDC housing.

12. The powered fiber optic system of claim 9 , wherein the IDC housing is configured in a pass-through power arrangement in which the IDC terminals pierce the jacket of the hybrid cable to contact the conductors of the hybrid cable, and the conductors of the hybrid cable extend through the IDC housing to the second cable port.

13. The powered fiber optic system of claim 7 , wherein the centrally positioned fiber pass-through groove is configured to route the at least one optical fiber through the IDC housing such that the at least one optical fiber extends from the IDC housing to the optical-to-electrical conversion circuitry.

14. The powered fiber optic system of claim 1 , further comprising a fiber management device situated in the interior of the body.
