Abstract

A protective helmet comprises a shell comprising a non-linear slit at least partially surrounding and defining a flexible section movable relative to the shell. The helmet further comprises an energy absorbing layer contacting an inner surface of the shell and an inner surface of the flexible section. Internal padding is operably coupled to the energy absorbing layer. The shell has a perimeter, and the non-linear slit does not extend to the perimeter of the shell. The flexible section moves relative to the shell upon the helmet receiving an impact energy to dampen the impact energy.

Claims (30)

1. A protective helmet comprising:

a shell comprising a non-linear slit partially surrounding and defining a flexible section movable relative to the shell, the flexible section is integrally joined to the shell at a remainder portion of the flexible section not surrounded by the non-linear slit;

an energy absorbing layer contacting an inner surface of the shell and an inner surface of the flexible section; and

internal padding operably coupled to the energy absorbing layer;

wherein the shell has a perimeter and the non-linear slit does not extend to the perimeter of the shell; and

wherein the flexible section moves relative to the shell upon the helmet receiving an impact energy to dampen the impact energy.

2. The protective helmet as recited in claim 1 , wherein the non-linear slit is generally U-shaped.

3. The protective helmet as recited in claim 1 , wherein the non-linear slit forms the flexible portion in a front portion of the shell.

4. The protective helmet as recited in claim 1 , wherein the energy absorbing layer is secured to the inner surface of the shell and the inner surface of the flexible section by a fastener.

5. The protective helmet as recited in claim 1 , wherein the energy absorbing layer comprises a plurality of indentations coupled to at least one flexible sheet.

6. The protective helmet as recited in claim 5 , wherein the plurality of indentations are flexible.

7. The protective helmet as recited in claim 6 , wherein the plurality of indentations are hollow.

8. The protective helmet as recited in claim 6 , wherein the plurality of indentations are generally conical.

9. The protective helmet as recited in claim 1 , wherein the flexible section is movable about the remainder portion.

10. The protective helmet as recited in claim 1 , wherein the energy absorbing layer includes a raised ridge portion extending at least partially within the non-linear slit.

11. A football helmet comprising:

a shell adapted to cover the head of a wearer, the shell having a front portion defining a face opening, the front portion having a lower edge;

a faceguard removably attached to the shell and at least partially covering the face opening;

a flexible section located at least partially between the lower edge and a crown of the shell, the flexible section formed by a non-linear slit at least partially surrounding and defining the flexible section and allowing the flexible section to be moveable relative to the shell upon the football helmet receiving an impact energy so as to dampen the impact energy, the flexible section is integrally joined to the shell at a remainder portion of the flexible section not surrounded by the non-linear slit;

an energy absorbing layer contacting an inner surface of the shell and an inner surface of the flexible section; and

internal padding operably coupled to the energy absorbing layer;

wherein the shell has a perimeter and the non-linear slit does not extend to the perimeter of the shell.

12. The football helmet as recited in claim 11 , wherein the non-linear slit is generally U-shaped.

13. The football helmet as recited in claim 11 , wherein the energy absorbing layer is secured to the inner surface of the shell and the inner surface of the flexible section by a fastener.

14. The football helmet as recited in claim 11 , wherein the energy absorbing layer comprises a plurality of indentations coupled to at least one flexible sheet.

15. The football helmet as recited in claim 14 , wherein the plurality of indentations are flexible.

16. The football helmet as recited in claim 15 , wherein the plurality of indentations are hollow.

17. The football helmet as recited in claim 15 , wherein the plurality of indentations are generally conical.

18. The football helmet as recited in claim 11 , wherein the flexible section is movable about the remainder portion.

19. The football helmet as recited in claim 11 , wherein the energy absorbing layer includes a raised ridge portion extending at least partially within the non-linear slit.
