Abstract

A general illumination lighting system and/or at least one targeted surface illumination lighting system. The general illumination lighting system including a general illuminating light source configured to generate light toward one or more surfaces or materials to inactivate one or more pathogens on the one or more surfaces or materials. The at least one targeted surface illumination lighting system including one or more targeted surface illuminating light sources that are integrated into or coupled to a plurality of devices, equipment, or fixtures. The one or more targeted surface illuminating light sources configured to generate targeted light toward one or more surfaces of the devices, equipment, or fixtures to inactivate one or more pathogens on the one or more surfaces. The light from the general illuminating light source and the one or more targeted surface illuminating light source including an inactivating portion having wavelengths in a range of 280 to 380 nanometers.

Claims (29)

1. A system comprising:

at least one general illuminating light source configured to generate light toward one or more surfaces or materials to inactivate one or more pathogens on the one or more surfaces or materials; and

at least one targeted surface illuminating light source integrated into at least one device, equipment, or fixture, the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source configured to generate light toward one or more surfaces of the at least one device, equipment, or fixture to inactivate one or more pathogens on the one or more surfaces;

wherein the light from the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source includes an inactivating portion having wavelengths in a range of 280 to 380 nanometers.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more pathogens that are inactivated by at least the inactivating portion of the light includes one or more of staphylococcus, clostridium , or streptococcus.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate the light toward the one or more surfaces or materials while also concurrently exposing one or more human beings to the light.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate the light toward the one or more surfaces or materials to inactivate the one or more pathogens without using a photosensitizer.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate the light so that the inactivating portion of the light is imperceptible to a human observer of the light.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate the inactivating portion of the light such that the inactivating portion of the light includes no more than 0.00015 watts of actinic ultraviolet light per square meter of floor area.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate the inactivating portion of the light such that the inactivating portion of the light includes no more than 0.5 watts per square meter of floor area of ultraviolet A (UVA) light.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate the inactivating portion of the light such that the inactivating portion of the light includes no more than 0.001 watts of actinic ultraviolet light per square meter of floor area.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate the inactivating portion of the light such that the inactivating portion of the light includes no more than 10 watts per square meter of floor area of UVA light per square meter of floor area.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate no more than 100 watts of blue light per steradian per square meter.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate the light such that a peak wavelength of the inactivating portion of the light is greater than 300 nanometers.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate the light such that the inactivating portion of the light includes wavelengths in a range of 320 to 380 nanometers.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one general illuminating light source and the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source are configured to generate the light such that the inactivating portion of the light is pulsed at a frequency exceeding 100 hertz with a duty factor of less than 0.5.

14. A system comprising:

at least one targeted surface illuminating light source integrated into at least one device, equipment, or fixture, the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source configured to generate light toward one or more surfaces of the at least one device, equipment, or fixture to inactivate one or more pathogens on the one or more surfaces;

wherein the light from the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source includes an inactivating portion having wavelengths in a range of 280 to 380 nanometers; and wherein the light includes no more than 10 watts per square meter of area.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the one or more pathogens that are inactivated by at least the inactivating portion of the light includes one or more of staphylococcus, clostridium , or streptococcus.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source is configured to generate the light toward the one or more surfaces of the at least one device, equipment, or fixture while also concurrently exposing one or more human beings to the light.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one targeted surface illuminating light source is configured to generate the light toward the one or more surfaces of the at least one device, equipment, or fixture to inactivate the one or more pathogens without using a photo sensitizer.

18. A method comprising:

generating light from a general illuminating light source toward one or more surfaces or materials to inactivate one or more pathogens on the one or more surfaces or materials; and

generating light from a targeted surface illuminating light source toward one or more surfaces of at least one device, equipment, or fixture to inactivate one or more pathogens on the one or more surfaces of the at least one device, equipment, or fixture;

wherein the targeted surface illuminating light source is integrated into the at least one device, equipment, or fixture; and
