Abstract

System and methods of delivering adhesive material are described for occluding target locations within a patient. The systems include a catheter configured to deliver adhesive to a target location and one or more of a light source to harden the adhesive, a retention structure to contain the adhesive prior to curing, a balloon to occupy a target location, and an open cell foam plug to occupy a target location.

Claims (30)

1. An occlusion device for treatment of a medical condition, comprising:

an elongated conduit having at least one passage between its proximal end and distal end, the elongated conduit conveying inflation fluid;

an inflatable balloon detachably connected to a distal portion of the conduit; the balloon being in communication with the at least one passage of the conduit to convey the inflation fluid to inflate the balloon; and,

a detachment assembly connecting the conduit and the inflatable balloon; the detachment assembly comprising a threaded male portion engaged with a threaded female portion, such that rotation of the conduit detaches the conduit from the inflatable balloon;

the balloon including a tissue adhesive, whereby as the balloon is filled with the inflation fluid, the tissue adhesive causes the balloon to adhere to tissue of a left atrial appendage as the balloon expands to contact the interior surface of the left atrial appendage.

2. The occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the balloon has a plurality of apertures located at its distal end.

3. The occlusion device of claim 2 , wherein the tissue adhesive migrates out of the plurality of apertures.

4. The occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein an exterior surface of the balloon is coated with the tissue adhesive.

5. The occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the inflation fluid is saline or a contrast agent.

6. The occlusion device of claim 1 , further comprising a radially expandable retention structure composed of braided mesh that is heat set to form a concave dish shape, positioned proximally of the balloon.

7. The occlusion device of claim 1 , wherein the occlusion device further comprises a valve between the at least one passage and an interior of the balloon, such that when the inflatable balloon is detached from the conduit, the valve is closed.

8. The occlusion device of claim 7 , wherein the balloon inflates to a generally conical shape with a plurality of apertures at a distal end of the conical shape.

9. An occlusion device for treatment of a medical condition, comprising:

a conduit having a passage between its proximal end and distal end;

a balloon assembly comprising an inflatable balloon detachably connected to a distal portion of the conduit; the balloon being in communication with the at least one passage of the conduit to convey the inflation fluid to inflate the balloon; and,

a detachment assembly removably connecting the balloon assembly to the conduit; the detachment assembly comprising a first threaded portion mating with a second threaded portion such that rotation of the conduit detaches the conduit from the balloon assembly;

the balloon configured to receive a tissue adhesive, whereby as the balloon is filled with the inflation fluid, the tissue adhesive causes the balloon to adhere to tissue of a left atrial appendage as the balloon expands to contact the interior surface of the left atrial appendage.

10. The occlusion system of claim 9 , wherein the balloon has a plurality of apertures located at its distal end.

11. The occlusion system of claim 10 , wherein the occlusion device further comprises a valve between the at least one passage and an interior of the balloon, such that when the occlusion portion is detached from the conduit, the valve is closed.

12. The occlusion system of claim 9 , wherein the tissue adhesive is configured to flow from the proximal end of the conduit, through the passage, into the balloon, and out of the plurality of apertures.

13. The occlusion system of claim 9 , further comprising a radially expandable retention structure composed of braided mesh that is heat set to form an expanded, concave shape, an open cylindrical shape, or a flat disc shape, the radially expandable retention structure positioned proximally of the balloon.

14. The occlusion system of claim 9 , wherein an exterior surface of the balloon is coated with tissue adhesive.

15. The occlusion system of claim 9 , wherein the occlusion device further comprises a valve between the at least one passage and an interior of the balloon, such that when the occlusion portion is detached from the conduit, the valve is closed.

16. A method for treating a left atrial appendage of a heart, comprising:

advancing a conduit within a patient until an occlusion portion at a distal end of the conduit is located at least partially within the left atrial appendage;

inflating a balloon located within the left atrial appendage;

adhering the balloon to an interior of the left atrial appendage with tissue adhesive; and,

detaching the balloon from the conduit at a detachment assembly having a threaded male portion engaged to a threaded female portion by rotating the conduit relative to the inflatable balloon.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the inflating the balloon further comprises injecting inflation fluid into a passage of the conduit and into the balloon.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the adhering the balloon further comprises having the balloon receive the tissue adhesive.
