Abstract

The disclosed head-mounted display system may include (1) a display for displaying computer-generated imagery, (2) a lens, (3) a peripheral wall extending from a back end to a front end, with the back end coupled to the lens and the front end coupled to the display such that the lens, the peripheral wall, and the display together define an enclosure, and (4) a speaker housed by the enclosure. Various other systems and methods of assembling the same are also disclosed.

Claims (48)

1. A head-mounted display system, comprising:

a display for displaying computer-generated imagery;

a lens;

a peripheral wall extending from a back end to a front end, the back end coupled to the lens and the front end coupled to the display such that the lens, the peripheral wall, and the display together define an enclosure; and

a speaker housed by the enclosure, wherein the speaker is at least partially disposed intermediate between the front and back ends of the peripheral wall and the speaker is disposed within an aperture that extends through the peripheral wall from an interior of the enclosure to an exterior of the enclosure such that the speaker emits front-volume sound to the exterior of the enclosure and emits back-volume sound to the interior of the enclosure.

2. The head-mounted display system of claim 1 , wherein the speaker comprises a diaphragm that is disposed within the aperture, the diaphragm being configured to move inwards towards the interior of the enclosure and outwards towards the exterior of the enclosure.

3. The head-mounted display system of claim 1 , wherein the aperture is defined by a cylindrical protrusion that extends outwards from the peripheral wall into the exterior of the enclosure.

4. The head-mounted display system of claim 1 , further comprising an audio delivery conduit extending from the aperture in a rearward direction, wherein the audio delivery conduit is dimensioned to direct the front-volume sound from the speaker toward a user's ear.

5. The head-mounted display system of claim 4 , further comprising a strap assembly configured to mount the head-mounted display system to the user's head, wherein at least a portion of the audio delivery conduit is defined within the strap assembly.

6. The head-mounted display system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second lens; and

a partition wall, disposed between the lens and the second lens, that partitions the enclosure into a first enclosure that houses the speaker and a second enclosure that houses a second speaker.

7. The head-mounted display system of claim 1 , further comprising

a second lens;

a second peripheral wall extending from a second back end to a second front end, the second back end coupled to the second lens and the second front end coupled to the display such that the second lens, the second peripheral wall, and the display together define a second enclosure; and

a second speaker housed within the second enclosure.

8. The head-mounted display system of claim 7 , wherein the display comprises:

a first display coupled to the front end of the peripheral wall; and

a second display coupled to the second front end of the second peripheral wall.

9. A method of assembling a head-mounted display system, comprising:

coupling a back end of a peripheral wall to a lens;

coupling a front end of the peripheral wall to a display such that the lens, the peripheral wall, and the display together define an enclosure; and

positioning at least a portion of a speaker disposed within an aperture that extends through the peripheral wall from an interior of the enclosure to an exterior of the enclosure, wherein the aperture is disposed intermediate between the front end and the back end of the peripheral wall, and wherein the speaker is positioned to emit front-volume sound to the exterior of the enclosure and to emit back-volume sound to the interior of the enclosure.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein positioning at least a portion of the speaker within the aperture comprises positioning a diaphragm of the speaker within the aperture such that the diaphragm moves inwards towards the interior of the enclosure and outwards towards the exterior of the enclosure.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the aperture is defined by a cylindrical protrusion that extends outwards from the peripheral wall into the exterior of the enclosure.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the display, the lens, and the peripheral wall together define an optical assembly; and the method further comprises mounting the optical assembly within a housing of the head-mounted display system.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising coupling a strap assembly to the housing, wherein the strap assembly:

is configured to mount the head-mounted display system to a user's head; and

defines an audio delivery conduit that:

extends from the aperture in a rearward direction toward the user's ear; and

is dimensioned to direct front-volume sound from the speaker toward a user's ear.

14. An optical assembly, comprising:

a display for displaying computer-generated imagery;

a lens;

a peripheral wall extending from a back end to a front end, the back end being coupled to the lens and the front end being coupled to the display such that the lens, the peripheral wall, and the display together define an enclosure; and

a speaker housed by the enclosure, wherein the speaker is at least partially disposed intermediate between the front and back ends of the peripheral wall and the speaker disposed within an aperture that extends through the peripheral wall from an interior of the enclosure to an exterior of the enclosure, and wherein the speaker is positioned to emit front-volume sound to the exterior of the enclosure and to emit back-volume sound to the interior of the enclosure.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the optical assembly further comprises a second lens and a second peripheral wall, the second lens positioned for viewing at least a portion of the display.

16. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

coupling a second back end of a second peripheral wall to a second lens;

coupling a second front end of the second peripheral wall to the display such that the second lens, the second peripheral wall, and the display together define a second enclosure, wherein the second peripheral wall extends from the second back end to the second front end; and

positioning at least a portion of a second speaker disposed within a second aperture that extends through the second peripheral wall from an interior of the second enclosure to an exterior of the second enclosure, wherein the second aperture is disposed intermediate between the second front end and the second back end of the second peripheral wall.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the first enclosure and the second enclosure are separated by a partition wall.

18. The optical assembly of claim 14 , further comprising:

a second lens;

a second peripheral wall extending from a second back end to a second front end, the second back end coupled to the second lens and the second front end being coupled to the display such that the second lens, the second peripheral wall, and the display further define the enclosure; and

a second speaker disposed within a second aperture that extends through the second peripheral wall from an interior of the enclosure to an exterior of the enclosure, wherein the second aperture is disposed intermediate between the second front end and the second back end of the second peripheral wall.

19. The optical assembly of claim 18 , further comprising a partition wall disposed between the lens and a second lens, wherein the partition wall partitions the enclosure into a first enclosure that houses at least the speaker and a second enclosure that houses at least the second speaker.

20. The optical assembly of claim 18 , wherein the second aperture is defined by a cylindrical protrusion that extends outwards from the second peripheral wall into the exterior of the enclosure.
