Abstract

A packaging system and method for receiving articles from a first location, such as a product delivery system, transporting the articles to a second location for unloading the articles such that they are placed in a desired orientation and number of columns, rows, and stacks.

Claims (34)

1. A transport system comprising:

a first conveyor assembly comprising a plurality of first interconnected track sections;

a plurality of individual supports movable along the first conveyor assembly independently of one another;

an electromagnetic switch configured to divert one or more individual supports from the first conveyor assembly to a secondary rail; and

a control system configured to control motion of the individual supports traveling along the first conveyor assembly and operation of the electromagnetic switch;

wherein the track sections comprise coils that product electromagnetic fields to move the individual supports.

2. The transport system of claim 1 , comprising an article receiving station configured to receive a stream of individual articles and to place one or more articles on the individual supports when on the first conveyor assembly.

3. The transport system of claim 2 , comprising a sensor configured to provide a signal to an operator and/or to the control system if an article is not placed properly on an individual support.

4. The transport system of claim 1 , comprising a second conveyor assembly that, in operation, receives individual supports from the first conveyor assembly.

5. The transport system of claim 1 , comprising a merge location where the individual supports diverted by the electromagnetic switch rejoin the first conveyor assembly.

6. The transport system of claim 1 , wherein the secondary rail leads to an unloading station, and wherein the electromagnetic switch diverts the individual supports to the unloading station.

7. The transport system of claim 1 , wherein the control system operates to regulate speeds of the individual supports.

8. The transport system of claim 1 , comprising a loading mechanism configured to place the one or more articles onto the individual supports.

9. The transport system of claim 1 , wherein the individual supports are pivotally coupled to mounts to rotate articles being transported by the supports into desired orientations.

10. The transport system of claim 1 , comprising an article transfer system configured to unload articles from the individual supports of the first conveyor assembly and to place the articles on second individual supports of a second conveyor assembly.

11. A transport system comprising:

a first conveyor assembly having a plurality of first individual supports movable along the first conveyor assembly independently of one another;

a second conveyor assembly;

an electromagnetic switch configured to divert one or more individual supports to a desired location; and

a control system configured to control motion of the first individual supports traveling along the first conveyor assembly and switching of the electromagnetic switch;

wherein the first and/or the second conveyor assembly comprises a plurality of interconnected track sections;

wherein the control system is configured to regulate speeds of the first individual supports traveling along the first conveyor assembly.

12. The transport system of claim 11 , wherein the second assembly comprises a plurality of second individual supports movable along the second conveyor assembly independently of one another, and wherein the control system controls motion of the second individual supports.

13. The transport system of claim 11 , wherein the first conveyor assembly includes a loading mechanism configured to grasp one or more articles and place the one or more articles onto one of the first individual supports.

14. The transport system of claim 11 , wherein the first individual supports of the first conveyor assembly are pivotally coupled to mounts to rotate articles being transported by the supports into a desired orientation.

15. A transport system comprising:

a first conveyor assembly having a plurality of first individual supports movable along the first conveyor assembly independently of one another;

a second conveyor assembly having a plurality of second individual supports movable along the second conveyor assembly independently of one another;

an electromagnetic switch configured to divert one or more individual supports to a desired location; and

a control system configured to control motion of the first and second individual supports traveling along the first and second conveyor assemblies, and switching of the electromagnetic switch;

wherein the first and/or the second conveyor assembly comprises a plurality of interconnected track sections;

wherein the control system is configured to regulate speeds of the first and second individual supports.

16. The transport system of claim 15 , comprising a merge location where the individual supports diverted by the electromagnetic switch rejoin the first conveyor assembly.

17. The transport system of claim 15 , wherein the secondary rail leads to an unloading station, and wherein the electromagnetic switch diverts the individual supports to the unloading station.
