Abstract

Compositions that include a clay such as kaolin dispersed in a liquid such as water may be useful for promoting the clotting of blood. The compositions may be in a liquid, gel, paste, foam, or another form. Uses may include treating a traumatic injury such as in injury caused by a bullet, an explosive, a blade etc., or an injury caused during a medical procedure such as surgery.

Claims (37)

1. A hemostatic device configured to dispense a hemostatic agent to a bleeding location within a long, tube-shaped interior region of an animal or person, the hemostatic device comprising:

a hemostatic composition comprising a clay hemostatic agent in powder form, wherein the clay hemostatic agent includes bentonite;

a reservoir configured to contain the hemostatic composition within the hemostatic device before use;

a dispensing component configured to dispense the hemostatic agent from the reservoir to the bleeding location, the dispensing component comprising a spray component with a tube;

a propellant gas configured to be transferred to the reservoir when the device is in use, the propellant gas comprising carbon dioxide configured to produce a pressure difference to dispense the hemostatic composition from the hemostatic device; and

a hand piece comprising a valve and an actuator configured to permit selective dispensing of the hemostatic composition from the hemostatic device;

wherein the hemostatic composition, when dispensed from the reservoir through the dispensing component by the propellant gas to the bleeding location within the long, tube-shaped interior region, assists in diminishing or halting bleeding.

2. The hemostatic device of claim 1 , wherein the hemostatic composition is in liquid form.

3. The hemostatic device of claim 2 , wherein the liquid hemostatic composition is aqueous.

4. The hemostatic device of claim 1 wherein the clay hemostatic agent further includes kaolin.

5. A method of using the hemostatic device of claim 1 , comprising dispensing the hemostatic composition to the bleeding location and aspirating liquid or blood away from the bleeding location using a liquid-removal component.

6. A hemostatic device configured to dispense a hemostatic agent to a bleeding location within an interior region of a patient, the hemostatic device comprising:

a hemostatic composition comprising a clay hemostatic agent in powder form, wherein the clay hemostatic agent includes bentonite;

a reservoir configured to contain the hemostatic composition within the hemostatic device; a dispensing component configured to dispense the hemostatic agent from the reservoir to the bleeding location, the dispensing component comprising a spray component with a tube;

a propellant gas within a headspace of the reservoir, the propellant gas configured to produce a pressure difference to dispense the hemostatic composition from the hemostatic device; and

a hand piece comprising a valve and an actuator configured to permit selective dispensing of the hemostatic composition from the hemostatic device;

wherein the hemostatic composition, when dispensed from the reservoir through the dispensing component by the propellant gas to the bleeding location, assists in diminishing or halting bleeding.

7. The hemostatic device of claim 6 , wherein the tube is configured to be inserted through a long, tube-shaped area of the patient to reach the interior region.

8. The hemostatic device of claim 6 , wherein the hemostatic composition is in liquid form.

9. The hemostatic device of claim 8 , wherein the liquid hemostatic composition is aqueous.

10. The hemostatic device of claim 6 , wherein the propellant gas is an inert gas.

11. The hemostatic device of claim 6 , wherein the propellant gas comprises one or more of carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

12. The hemostatic device of claim 6 , wherein the clay hemostatic agent further comprises kaolin.

13. A method of using the hemostatic device of claim 6 , comprising dispensing the hemostatic composition to the bleeding location.

14. A hemostatic device comprising:

a clay hemostatic agent in powder form, wherein the clay hemostatic agent includes bentonite;

a reservoir configured to contain the hemostatic agent within the hemostatic device before delivery;

a tube configured to be inserted into a patient to a location of bleeding;

a dispensing component configured to dispense the hemostatic agent to the bleeding location;

a propellant gas within the reservoir, the propellant gas configured to dispense the hemostatic composition from the hemostatic device; and

an actuator configured to permit dispensing of the hemostatic composition from the hemostatic device; wherein the hemostatic composition, when dispensed from the reservoir through the tube and the dispensing component by the propellant gas to the bleeding location, assists in diminishing or halting bleeding.

15. The hemostatic device of claim 14 , wherein the tube is configured to be inserted through a long, tube-shaped location of the patient to reach the bleeding location.

16. The hemostatic device of claim 14 , wherein the hemostatic agent is part of a hemostatic composition that is flowable.

17. The hemostatic device of claim 14 , wherein the hemostatic agent is part of a hemostatic composition.

18. The hemostatic device of claim 14 , wherein the propellant gas comprises one or more of carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

19. The hemostatic device of claim 14 , wherein the clay hemostatic agent further comprises kaolin.

20. A method of using the hemostatic device of claim 14 , comprising dispensing the hemostatic agent to the bleeding location.
