Abstract

Dual-lens assemblies and cameras including dual lens-assemblies that include a first lens barrel securing a first lens having a first optical axis and a second lens barrel securing a second lens having a second optical axis are disclosed. In one dual-lens assembly, the first optical axis is approximately parallel to and spaced from the second optical axis by a lateral offset, axial lengths of the first lens barrel and the second lens barrel are approximately equal, and the first lens and the second lens are oriented in opposite directions at opposing ends of the first lens barrel and the second lens barrel.

Claims (73)

1. A camera, comprising:

a camera body;

a first lens disposed on a first side of the camera body and having a first optical axis;

a first image sensor that captures light from the first lens;

a second lens disposed on a second side of the camera body and having a second optical axis;

a second image sensor that captures light from the second lens;

wherein the first lens and the second lens are oriented in opposite directions, and the first image sensor and the second image sensor are oriented in opposite directions and approximately parallel with the first lens and the second lens;

wherein the first optical axis is approximately parallel to and spaced from the second optical axis by a lateral offset; and

wherein the lateral offset measures between 10 mm and 25 mm.

2. The camera of claim 1 , wherein the first lens has a first field of view, and the second lens has a second field of view that overlaps the first field of view.

3. The camera of claim 2 , wherein the first image sensor captures a first hyper-hemispherical image plane from the first lens, and the second image sensor captures a second hyper-hemispherical image plane from the second lens.

4. The camera of claim 1 , further comprising a first lens barrel securing the first lens and a second lens barrel securing the second lens within the camera body;

wherein a distance between an outer cylindrical surface of the first lens barrel and an outer cylindrical surface of the second lens barrel is smaller than diameters of the first lens barrel and the second lens barrel.

5. A camera, comprising:

a camera body;

a first lens disposed on a first side of the camera body and having a first optical axis;

a first image sensor that captures light from the first lens;

a second lens disposed on a second side of the camera body and having a second optical axis;

a second image sensor that captures light from the second lens;

wherein the first lens and the second lens are oriented in opposite directions, and the first image sensor and the second image sensor are oriented in opposite directions and approximately parallel with the first lens and the second lens;

wherein the first optical axis is approximately parallel to and spaced from the second optical axis by a lateral offset; and

wherein a first outer surface of the first lens is spaced apart from a second outer surface of the second lens by a longitudinal offset measuring between 25 mm and 35 mm.

6. The camera of claim 5 , further comprising a first lens barrel securing the first lens and a second lens barrel securing the second lens within the camera body;

wherein a distance between an outer cylindrical surface of the first lens barrel and an outer cylindrical surface of the second lens barrel is smaller than diameters of the first lens barrel and the second lens barrel.

7. A camera, comprising:

a camera body;

a first lens disposed on a first side of the camera body and having a first optical axis;

a first image sensor that captures light from the first lens;

a second lens disposed on a second side of the camera body and having a second optical axis;

a second image sensor that captures light from the second lens; and

a first lens barrel securing the first lens and a second lens barrel securing the second lens within the camera body;

wherein the first lens and the second lens are oriented in opposite directions, and the first image sensor and the second image sensor are oriented in opposite directions and approximately parallel with the first lens and the second lens;

wherein the first optical axis is approximately parallel to and spaced from the second optical axis by a lateral offset; and

wherein a distance between an outer cylindrical surface of the first lens barrel and an outer cylindrical surface of the second lens barrel is smaller than diameters of the first lens barrel and the second lens barrel.

8. The camera of claim 7 , wherein axial lengths of the first lens barrel and the second lens barrel are approximately equal.

9. The camera of claim 7 , wherein diameters of the first lens barrel and the second lens barrel are approximately equal.

10. The camera of claim 7 , wherein central axes of the first lens barrel and the second lens barrel are approximately parallel to and spaced from each other by the lateral offset.

11. A dual-lens assembly, comprising:

a first lens having a first optical axis;

a first image sensor capturing a first image plane from light entering the first lens; and

a second lens having a second optical axis;

a second image sensor capturing a second image plane from light entering the second lens;

wherein the first lens and the second lens are oriented in opposite directions and have overlapping fields of view,

wherein the first optical axis is approximately parallel to and spaced from the second optical axis by a lateral offset, and

wherein the lateral offset measures between 10 mm and 25 mm.

12. The dual-lens assembly of claim 11 , further comprising:

a first lens barrel having a hollow cylindrical shape, wherein the first lens is secured to the first lens barrel; and

a second lens barrel having a hollow cylindrical shape, wherein the second lens is secured to the second lens barrel.

13. The dual-lens assembly of claim 12 , further comprising:

a first base portion extending in an outward radial direction from a bottom of the first lens barrel and joined with a midsection of the second lens barrel; and

a second base portion extending in an outward radial direction from a bottom of the second lens barrel and joined with a midsection of the first lens barrel.

14. The dual-lens assembly of claim 12 , wherein a distance between an outer cylindrical surface of the first lens barrel and an outer cylindrical surface of the second lens barrel is smaller than diameters of the first lens barrel and the second lens barrel.

15. A dual-lens assembly, comprising:

a first lens having a first optical axis;

a first image sensor capturing a first image plane from light entering the first lens; and

a second lens having a second optical axis;

a second image sensor capturing a second image plane from light entering the second lens;

wherein the first lens and the second lens are oriented in opposite directions and have overlapping fields of view,

wherein the first optical axis is approximately parallel to and spaced from the second optical axis by a lateral offset, and

wherein outer surfaces of the first lens and the second lens are spaced apart by a longitudinal offset measuring between 25 mm and 35 mm parallel with the first optical axis and the second optical axis.

16. A camera, comprising:

a body;

a first lens having a first optical axis and being oriented in a first direction relative to the body;

a first image sensor positioned in the body and oriented substantially perpendicular to the first optical axis for capturing light passing through the first lens;

a second lens having a second optical axis and being oriented in a second direction relative to the body, the second direction being opposite the first direction; and

a second image sensor positioned in the body and oriented substantially perpendicular to the second optical axis for capturing light passing through the second lens;

wherein the first optical axis is approximately parallel to and spaced from the second optical axis by a lateral offset; and

wherein the lateral offset measures between 10 mm and 25 mm.

17. The camera of claim 16 , wherein the first lens and the second lens have overlapping fields of view.

18. The camera of claim 17 , wherein the fields of view are hyper-hemispherical.

19. The camera of claim 16 , wherein the first lens is spaced from the second lens by a longitudinal offset measuring between 25 mm and 35 mm.

20. The camera of claim 16 , further comprising a first lens barrel securing the first lens and a second lens barrel securing the second lens within the body;

wherein a distance between an outer cylindrical surface of the first lens barrel and an outer cylindrical surface of the second lens barrel is smaller than diameters of the first lens barrel and the second lens barrel.
