Claims (49)

1. A computer-implemented gaming method, comprising:

providing an electronic gaming system comprising a display, an input device, a processor, a random number generator and memory;

providing a game configured to be executed by the processor, the game comprising a non-wager portion in which wagers are not made and a wager portion in which a plurality of first wagering opportunities are configured to be displayed on the display and with which a player may interact to trigger wagers and at least one second wagering opportunity configured to be displayed on the display and with which the player may; interact to trigger wagers;

providing and storing in the memory a first payout schedule and a different, initially-locked, second payout schedule, the first and second payout schedules being configured to determine a payout for wagers triggered by successful player interactions with one or more of the plurality of first wagering opportunities and the at least one second wagering opportunity, respectively;

executing the game using the processor and receiving, via the input device, one or more inputs from a player that cause an interaction with at least one of the plurality of first wagering opportunities in the game and, when the interaction is determined to be successful, selectively triggering a wager and awarding the player an amount determined using the first payout schedule;

determining, using the processor, if the player inputs that have been received are effective to satisfy an in-game achievement criterium, the in-game achievement criterium being configured to require receipt of player inputs that satisfy one or more in-game achievements within the non-wager portion of the game and,

only when the in-game achievement criterium has been satisfied, presenting an opportunity for interaction, via received inputs from the player, with the at least one second wagering opportunity, a successful interaction with which unlocks the initially-locked second payout schedule and triggers a wager and a random award to the player of an amount determined using the unlocked second payout schedule and an output of the random number generator;

when the in-game achievement criterium has not been satisfied or when the player declines the presented opportunity to interact with the second wagering opportunity, foregoing presenting and enabling the player to interact with the at least one second wagering opportunity, keeping the second payout schedule locked and using the first payout schedule and outputs of the random number generator to determine random amounts to award to the player for at least some later-occurring successful interactions with one or more of the plurality of first wagering opportunities.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the game comprises a non-wager portion in which wagers are not made and a wager portion in which wagers are made and wherein the in-game achievement criterium is configured to require receipt of player inputs that satisfy one or more in-game achievements within the wager portion of the game.

3. 4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein presenting the opportunity for interaction, via received inputs from the player, with the at least one second wagering opportunity is performed in a bonus portion of the game, wherein the bonus portion of the game is configured to be bypassed when the player declines the presented opportunity to interact with the second wagering opportunity.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the in-game achievement criterium comprises achieving, within the game, a predetermined number of successful interactions with at least one of the plurality of first wagering opportunities.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 wherein, for at least one of the plurality of first wagering opportunities, the award to the player for successful interaction therewith is a predetermined amount.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising guaranteeing greater than 100% payback for amounts wagered when successfully interacting with the at least one second wagering opportunity.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising withholding a portion of the amount to be awarded to the player for successfully interacting with the at least one first wagering opportunity to fund the amount awarded to the player for successfully interacting with the at least one second wagering opportunity.

9. An electronic gaming device, comprising:

a memory; at least one processor; a display; a random number generator; a user interface; and

the processor being configured to execute a plurality of processes, the plurality of processes comprising processing logic to:

provide a game comprising a non-wager portion in which wagers are not made and a wager portion in which a plurality of first wagering opportunities are provided with which a player may interact to trigger wagers and at least one second wagering opportunity with which the player may interact to trigger wagers via the user interface and the display;

provide a first payout schedule and a different, initially-locked, second payout schedule stored in the memory, the first and second payout schedules being configured to determine a payout for wagers triggered by successful player interactions with one or more of the plurality of first wagering opportunities and the at least one second wagering opportunity, respectively;

receive, via the user interface, one or more inputs from a player that cause an interaction with at least one of the plurality of first wagering opportunities in the game and, when the interaction is determined to be successful, selectively triggering a wager and awarding the player an amount determined using the first payout schedule;

determine if the player inputs that have been received are effective to satisfy an in-game achievement criterium, the in-game achievement criterium being configured to require receipt of player inputs that satisfy one or more in-game achievements within the non-wager portion of the game and,

only when the in-game achievement criterium has been satisfied, present an opportunity for interaction, via received inputs from the player, with the at least one second wagering opportunity, a successful interaction with which unlocks the initially-locked second payout schedule and triggers a wager and a random award to the player of an amount determined using the unlocked second payout schedule and an output of the random number generator;

when the in-game achievement criterium has not been satisfied or when the player declines the presented opportunity to interact with the second wagering opportunity, forego presenting and enabling the player to interact with the at least one second wagering opportunity, keeping the second payout schedule locked and using the first payout schedule and outputs of the random number generator to determine random amounts to award to the player for at least some later-occurring successful interactions with one or more of the plurality of first wagering opportunities.

10. The electronic gaming device of claim 9 , wherein the game comprises a non-wager portion in which wagers are not made and a wager portion in which wagers are made and wherein the in-game achievement criterium is configured to require receipt of player inputs that satisfy one or more in-game achievements within the wager portion of the game.

11. The electronic gaming device of claim 9 , wherein the game comprises a non-wager portion in which wagers are not made and a wager portion in which wagers are made and wherein the in-game achievement criterium is configured to require receipt of player inputs that satisfy one or more in-game achievements within the non-wager and wager portions of the game.

12. The electronic gaming device of claim 9 , wherein the processing logic for presenting the opportunity for interaction, via received inputs from the player, with the at least one second wagering opportunity is executed in a bonus portion of the game, wherein the bonus portion of the game is configured to be bypassed when the player declines the presented opportunity to interact with the second wagering opportunity.
