Abstract

The present disclosure includes techniques that enable a conditioned air system to automatically restore functionality and/or to operate at reduced functionality when a fault is detected, for example, to facilitate reducing likelihood that continuing operation with the fault present will decrease lifespan of the conditioned air system. To facilitate improving operation of the conditioned air system when a fault is present, the control system of the conditioned air system may utilize substitute sensor data and/or adjust its control algorithm. In this manner, the control system may facilitate improving operational reliability and/or availability of the conditioned air system, for example, by adaptively adjusting its operation to enable the conditioned air system to continue operating even when a fault is present, while reducing likelihood that the continued operation will reduce lifespan of the conditioned air system.

Claims (29)

1. A control board that restores functionality to conditioned air equipment when the conditioned air equipment experiences a fault, wherein the control board is programmed to:

receive an indication that a suction pressure sensor is faulty, wherein the suction pressure sensor is configured to provide suction pressure sensor information; and

in response to receiving the indication that the suction pressure sensor is faulty:

determine to substitute the suction pressure sensor information with variable speed drive information, indoor fan speed measurements, or a combination thereof based on an operation to be performed by the HVAC system; and

operate the conditioned air equipment using the variable speed drive information, the indoor fan speed measurements, or a combination thereof, instead of the suction pressure sensor information.

2. The control board of claim 1 , wherein, in response to receiving the indication that the suction pressure sensor is faulty, the control board is configured to output a fault indication associated with the suction pressure sensor.

3. The control board of claim 1 , wherein the conditioned air equipment comprises an outdoor unit, wherein the outdoor unit comprises:

an outdoor fan coupled to the control board; and

a variable speed drive coupled to the control board and to a compressor, wherein:

the variable speed drive is configured to provide the variable speed drive information; and

in response to receiving the indication that the suction pressure sensor is faulty, the control board is programmed to determine to substitute the suction pressure sensor information with the variable speed drive information when the control board is implemented to protect an envelope limit by controlling the outdoor fan to heat a building.

4. The control board of claim 3 , wherein the control board is programmed to protect the envelope limit by controlling the outdoor fan based on the variable speed drive information.

5. The control board of claim 1 , wherein the control board is configured to substitute the suction pressure information with the indoor fan speed measurements in response to receiving the indication that the suction pressure sensor is faulty.

6. The control board of claim 1 , wherein the control board is configured to receive the indoor fan speed measurements from an indoor fan sensor of an indoor unit of the conditioned air equipment.

7. The control board of claim 3 , wherein the variable speed drive information comprises a frequency or a voltage associated with the variable speed drive.

The control board of claim 4 , wherein the variable speed drive information comprises a frequency or a voltage associated with the variable speed drive, and wherein the control board is programmed to protect the envelope limit by controlling the outdoor fan based on the frequency or the voltage.

9. A method that restores functionality to conditioned air equipment when the conditioned air equipment experiences a fault, comprising:

receiving an indication that a discharge pressure sensor of the conditioned air equipment is faulty, wherein the discharge pressure sensor is configured to provide discharge pressure sensor information associated with a compressor of the conditioned air equipment; and

in response to receiving the indication that the discharge pressure sensor is faulty:

substituting variable speed drive information for the discharge pressure sensor information; and

operating the conditioned air equipment using the variable speed drive information instead of the discharge pressure sensor information.

The method of claim 9 , comprising, in response to receiving the indication that the discharge pressure sensor is faulty, determining to substitute indoor pressure sensor information for the discharge pressure sensor information when the conditioned air equipment is configured to protect itself from high pressure conditions.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the indoor pressure sensor information is provided by an indoor pressure sensor of an indoor unit of the conditioned air equipment.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the indoor pressure sensor comprises an indoor condenser pressure sensor.

The method of claim 9 , comprising, in response to receiving the indication that the discharge pressure sensor is faulty, determining to substitute the variable speed drive information when the conditioned air equipment is configured to protect an envelope limit by controlling an indoor fan of the conditioned air equipment to heat a building, wherein the variable speed drive information is provided by a variable speed drive of the conditioned air equipment.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the conditioned air equipment is configured to protect the envelope limit by controlling the indoor fan based on the variable speed drive information.

The method of claim 9 , comprising, in response to receiving the indication that the discharge pressure sensor is faulty, operating the conditioned air equipment using the variable speed drive information provided by a variable speed drive of the conditioned air equipment instead of the discharge pressure sensor information.

16. The method of claim 15 , comprising limiting the speed of the outdoor fan based on the variable drive speed information to protect an envelope limit.

17. The method of claim 9 , comprising, in response to receiving the indication that the discharge pressure sensor is faulty, outputting a fault indication associated with the discharge pressure sensor.
