Abstract

The present disclosure provides methods to produce 5-(halomethyl)furfural, including 5-(chloromethyl)furfural, by acid-catalyzed conversion of C6 saccharides, including isomers thereof, polymers thereof, and certain derivatives thereof. The methods make use of acids with lower concentrations, and allows for conversion of sugars into 5-(halomethyl)furfural at higher temperatures and faster reaction or residence times.

Claims (33)

1. A method for producing 5-(halomethyl)furfural, comprising: combining feedstock, acid, and salt to produce 5-(halomethyl)furfural, wherein:

the feedstock comprises glucose, fructose, sucrose, starch, inulin, cellulose, hemicellulose, cellulosic oligomers, or cellobiose, or any combinations thereof;

the acid comprises halogen-containing mineral acid or halogen-containing organic acid, or any combinations thereof;

the acid is continuously added at a rate to maintain an average [H + ] greater than 0 M and less than or equal to 8 M; and

the salt comprises inorganic salt or organic salt, or any combinations thereof,

wherein the combination of the feedstock, acid and salt has a [X − ] of at least 8 M, wherein X − is halo.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acid comprises halogen-containing mineral acid.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acid comprises HCl, HBr, or a combination thereof.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the acid comprises HCl.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the acid comprises HCl and HBr.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the salt comprises inorganic salt.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the salt comprises lithium salt, sodium salt, potassium salt, rubidium salt, cesium salt, magnesium salt, or calcium salt, or any combinations thereof.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the salt comprises lithium salt or calcium salt, or any combinations thereof.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the salt comprises LiCl.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the salt comprises LiCl and LiBr.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the salt comprises LiCl and CaCl 2 .

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acid comprises HCl, and the salt comprises LiCl and CaCl 2 .

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acid comprises HCl, and the salt comprises LiBr.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acid comprises HCl and HBr, and the salt comprises LiCl and LiBr.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the combining of the feedstock, acid, and salt further produces humins, levulinic acid, formic acid, furfural, gamma valerolactone, or fulvic acid, or any combinations thereof.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the feedstock, acid and salt are further combined with solvent.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the solvent has a dipole moment less than 20.1D.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the 5-(halomethyl)furfural produced has a partition coefficient of at least 0.2.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the 5-(halomethyl)furfural produced has a partition coefficient between 0.2 and 200.

20. The method of claim 3 , wherein the solvent comprises organic solvent, and wherein the combining of the feedstock, acid, salt and solvent forms a reaction mixture having an aqueous phase and an organic phase, and wherein at least a portion of the 5-(halomethyl)furfural produced is soluble in the organic phase, and the method further comprises:

separating the organic phase from the aqueous phase to isolate a product-containing phase, wherein the product-containing phase comprises 5-(halomethyl)furfural;

cooling the product-containing phase to a temperature at which at least a portion of the 5-(halomethyl)furfural and the organic solvent forms multiple phases; and

isolating the 5-(halomethyl)furfural from the cooled product-containing phase.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acid is added continuously at a rate such that the [H + ] is greater than 0 M and less than or equal to 8 M.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the acid and salt each independently comprise a halo anion, and the total anion concentration is at least 6 M.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the acid and salt each independently comprise a halo anion, and the total anion concentration is at least 8 M.

24. The method of claim 1 , wherein the acid is added continuously at a rate such that the [H + ] is greater than 0 M and less than or equal to 6 M.

25. The method of claim 1 , wherein the 5-(halomethyl)furfural is produced at a temperature of at least 110° C.
