Abstract

The described implementations relate a Passive Optical Network (PON). In one implementation, the PON includes an Optical Network Unit (ONU) that has at least one transmitter subsystem component and an associated optical transmitter. The at least one transmitter subsystem component may be configured to be in an enabled state during a timeslot period assigned to the ONU for transmitting an upstream data burst and a disabled state after the timeslot ends.

Claims (34)

1. A method configured to control an optical transmitter subsystem, the method comprising:

determining a start position of an upstream timeslot for transmitting optical signals;

determining an amount of time necessary to enable a current source in the optical transmitter subsystem to transition from a reduced energy state to a ready state where the current source is capable of providing current to a component in the optical transmitter subsystem;

generating a set of instructions that instructs the current source to activate at a time corresponding to the amount of time prior to the start position of the upstream timeslot, wherein the set of instructions instructs a component in the optical transmitter subsystem different from the current source to activate at a second time prior to the start position of the upstream timeslot; and

providing the set of instructions to the current source.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reduced energy state comprises an energy state in which the current source is powered down.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reduced energy state comprises an energy state in which the current source consumes a predetermined percentage of an amount of energy consumed by the current source when the current source is in the ready state.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising obtaining the start position and an end position from a downstream data transmission.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the downstream data transmission comprises an upstream bandwidth map.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the current source comprises a modulation current source.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the current source comprises a laser enable current source.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reduced energy state comprises an energy state in which the current source is disabled.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising obtaining the start position and an end position from a downstream data transmission stored in a storage medium.

10. An optical transmitter subsystem, comprising:

a laser driver configured to control a laser;

a prediction engine circuit configured to:

determine a start position of an upstream timeslot for transmitting optical signals;

determine an amount of time necessary to enable a current source to transition from a reduced energy state to a ready state where the current source is capable of providing current to the laser;

generate a set of instructions that instructs the current source to activate at a time corresponding to the amount of time prior to the start position of the upstream timeslot, wherein the set of instructions instructs a component in the optical transmitter subsystem different from the current source to activate at a second time prior to the start position of the upstream timeslot; and

provide the set of instructions to the laser driver.

11. The optical transmitter subsystem of claim 10 , wherein the reduced energy state comprises an energy state in which the current source is powered down.

12. The optical transmitter subsystem of claim 10 , wherein the reduced energy state comprises an energy state in which the current source consumes a predetermined percentage of an amount of energy consumed by the current source when the current source is in the ready state.

13. The optical transmitter subsystem of claim 10 , wherein the prediction engine circuit is configured to obtain the start position and an end position from a frame generator.

14. The optical transmitter subsystem of claim 10 , wherein the prediction engine circuit is configured to obtain the start position and an end position from an upstream bandwidth map.

15. The optical transmitter subsystem of claim 10 , wherein the current source comprises a modulation current source.

16. The optical transmitter subsystem of claim 10 , wherein the current source comprises a laser enable current source.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable media having machine-executable instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to:

determine a start position of an upstream timeslot for transmitting optical signals;

determine an amount of time necessary to enable a current source in an optical transmitter to transition from a reduced energy state to a ready state where the current source is capable of providing current to a component in the optical transmitter;

generate a set of instructions that instructs the current source to activate at a time corresponding to the amount of time prior to the start position of the upstream timeslot, wherein the set of instructions instructs a component in the optical transmitter different from the current source to activate at a second time prior to the start position of the upstream timeslot; and

provide the set of instructions to the current source.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 17 , wherein the reduced energy state comprises an energy state in which the current source is powered down.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 17 , wherein the reduced energy state comprises an energy state in which the current source consumes a predetermined percentage of an amount of energy consumed by the current source when the current source is in the ready state.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 17 , further comprising instructions for obtaining the start position and an end position from a downstream data transmission.
