Abstract

A system and method provides a glucose report for determining glycemic risk based on an ambulatory glucose profile of glucose data over a time period, a glucose control assessment based on median and variability of glucose, and indicators of high glucose variability. Time of day periods are shown at which glucose levels can be seen. A median glucose goal and a low glucose line provide coupled with glucose variability provide a view into effects that raising or lowering the median goal would have. Likelihood of low glucose, median glucose compared to goal, and variability of glucose below median provide probabilities based on glucose data. Patterns can be seen and provide guidance for treatment.

Claims (34)

1. A method of using insulin information for meal indication, comprising:

storing glucose data representative of sensed glucose of a patient over a period of time in a nonvolatile memory;

collecting, by a processor coupled to the nonvolatile memory, insulin timing information of the patient;

determining, by the processor, an occurrence of a meal implicitly based on the collected insulin timing information;

identifying, by the processor, a portion of the glucose data as being temporally related to the meal;

performing, by the processor, pattern analysis on the portion of the glucose data temporally related to the meal;

identifying, by the processor, a number of rise or fall patterns in the portion of the glucose data; and

providing a first treatment recommendation when the number of the rise or fall patterns is indicative of interday variability, and providing a second treatment recommendation when the number of the rise or fall patterns is indicative of intraday variability, wherein the first treatment recommendation is different than the second treatment recommendation.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first or second treatment recommendations is a timing of an insulin bolus or a size of an insulin bolus.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first or second treatment recommendations pertains to a timing of a meal or exercise.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein collecting the insulin timing information comprises receiving manual entry of the insulin timing information.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein collecting the insulin timing information comprises automatically reading the insulin timing information from a dosing device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising marking a meal in the glucose data based on the collected insulin timing information.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising displaying the portion of glucose data on a display in communication with the processor.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein performing, with the processor, pattern analysis on the portion of the glucose data comprises assessing intraday variability and interday variability.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing the first treatment recommendation when the number of the rise or fall patterns is at or above a predetermined number, and providing the second treatment recommendation when the number of the rise or fall patterns is below the predetermined number.

10. A system for using insulin information for meal indication, comprising:

a glucose sensor configured to collect glucose data representative of sensed glucose levels of a patient;

a nonvolatile memory in which is stored the glucose data representative of sensed glucose levels of the patient over a period of time; and

a processor coupled with the nonvolatile memory, wherein the processor is programmed to:

collect insulin timing information of the patient;

determine an occurrence of a meal implicitly based on the collected insulin timing information;

identify a portion of the glucose data as being temporally related to the meal;

identify a number of rise or fall patterns in the portion of the glucose data; and

provide a first treatment recommendation when the number of the rise or fall patterns is indicative of interday variability, and provide a second treatment recommendation when the number of the rise or fall patterns is indicative of intraday variability, wherein the first treatment recommendation is different than the second treatment recommendation.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the first or second treatment recommendations is a timing of an insulin bolus or a size of an insulin bolus.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the first or second treatment recommendations pertains to a timing of a meal or exercise.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is programmed to receive manual entry of the insulin timing information to collect the insulin timing information of the patient.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is programmed to automatically read the insulin timing information from a dosing device to collect the insulin timing information of the patient.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is programmed to mark a meal in the glucose data based on the insulin timing information.

16. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a display, wherein the processor is programmed to cause display of the portion of glucose data on the display.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is programmed to assess intraday variability and interday variability.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is programmed to perform pattern analysis on the portion of the glucose data temporally related to the meal.

19. The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is further programmed to provide the first treatment recommendation when the number of the rise or fall patterns is at or above a predetermined number, and provide the second treatment recommendation when the number of the rise or fall patterns is below the predetermined number.
