Abstract

A method at a computing device in an intelligent transportation system for reconfiguring a road segment, the method including receiving a request from a second computing device associated with a vehicle to change a configuration for the road segment; determining a road segment configuration; and reconfiguring the road segment based on the determined road segment configuration.

Claims (29)

1. A method at a computing device in an intelligent transportation system for reconfiguring a road segment of a road network of the intelligent transportation system, the method comprising:

receiving a request from a second computing device associated with a vehicle to change a configuration for the road segment, wherein the request is a request to change a lane direction in the road segment and wherein the request includes a start time for the reconfiguration;

determining the configuration for the road segment based on the request; and

reconfiguring the road segment based on the determined configuration for the road segment, wherein the computing device is associated with a second vehicle, the reconfiguring including transmitting a message to the vehicle indicating a time during which the second vehicle will be on the road segment;

transmitting, using V2X communication, an indication of the reconfigured road segment to other vehicles in proximity to the road segment, the indication comprising a time period during which the road segment is reconfigured.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the time period is sufficient for the vehicle to traverse the road segment.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the time period further includes a buffer time to ensure the vehicle has cleared the traffic segment.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is a controller and the request includes a route for the vehicle, and wherein the reconfiguring includes reconfiguring a plurality of road segments for the vehicle along the route.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the road segment is an intersection, and wherein the reconfiguring includes assigning a plurality of lanes as turn lanes for a set time period.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the road segment is an intersection with a plurality of stop signs, and wherein the reconfiguring includes allowing a plurality of vehicles to enter from a first direction before allowing a vehicle to enter from a second direction.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determining uses intelligent transportation system signaling to find whether any lanes in a road segment are blocked.

8. A computing device in an intelligent transportation system for reconfiguring a road segment of a road network of the intelligent transportation system, the computing device comprising:

a processor; and

a communications subsystem, wherein the computing device is configured to:

receive a request from a second computing device associated with a vehicle to change a configuration for the road segment, wherein the request is a request to change a lane direction in the road segment and wherein the request includes a start time for the reconfiguration;

determine the configuration for the road segment based on the request; and

reconfigure the road segment based on the determined configuration for the road segment, wherein the computing device is associated with a second vehicle, the reconfiguring including transmitting a message to the vehicle indicating a time during which the second vehicle will be on the road segment;

transmit, using V2X communication, an indication of the reconfigured road segment to other vehicles in proximity to the road segment, the indication comprising a time period during which the road segment is reconfigured.

9. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the time period is sufficient for the vehicle to traverse the road segment.

10. The computing device of claim 9 , wherein the time period further includes a buffer time to ensure the vehicle has cleared the traffic segment.

11. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the computing device is a controller and the request includes a route for the vehicle, and wherein the reconfiguring includes reconfiguring a plurality of road segments for the vehicle along the route.

12. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the road segment is an intersection, and wherein the computing device is configured to reconfigure by assigning a plurality of lanes as turn lanes for a set time period.

13. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the road segment is an intersection with a plurality of stop signs, and wherein the computing device is configured to reconfigure by allowing a plurality of vehicles to enter from a first direction before allowing a vehicle to enter from a second direction.

14. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the computing device is configured to determine using intelligent transportation system signaling to find whether any lanes in a road segment are blocked.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium for storing instruction code, which, when executed by a processor of a computing device in an intelligent transportation system for reconfiguring a road segment of a road network of the intelligent transportation system, cause the computing device to:

receive a request from a second computing device associated with a vehicle to change a configuration for the road segment, wherein the request is a request to change a lane direction in the road segment and wherein the request includes a start time for the reconfiguration;

determine the configuration for the road segment based on the request; and

reconfigure the road segment based on the determined configuration for the road segment, wherein the computing device is associated with a second vehicle, the reconfiguring including transmitting a message to the vehicle indicating a time during which the second vehicle will be on the road segment;

transmit, using V2X communication, an indication of the reconfigured road segment to other vehicles in proximity to the road segment, the indication comprising a time period during which the road segment is reconfigured.
