Abstract

Example embodiments are directed to a device comprising an antenna circuit that receives a radio frequency (RF) signal and that converts the RF signal into an electrical signal, a sensing circuit that senses the electrical signal and that outputs an output signal based on the sensed electrical signal, at least one processing circuit that generates at least one control signal based on the output signal, and a switching circuit that couples the antenna circuit to either the sensing circuit to enter a standby mode of the device or to the at least one processing circuit to exit the standby mode and enter an active mode of the device based on the at least one control signal.

Claims (22)

1. A device, comprising: an antenna circuit that receives a radio frequency (RF) signal and that converts the RF signal into an electrical signal; a sensing circuit that senses the electrical signal and that outputs an output signal based on the sensed electrical signal; at least one processing circuit that generates at least one control signal based on the output signal; and a switching circuit that couples the antenna circuit to either the sensing circuit to enter a standby mode of the device and to the at least one processing circuit to exit the standby mode and enter an active mode of the device based on the at least one control signal, wherein the at least one control signal includes a first control signal that causes the switching circuit to couple the antenna circuit to the sensing circuit to enter the standby mode.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processing circuit generates the first control signal in response to determining that the at least one signal processing circuit will be turned off.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the determining includes determining that the at least one signal processing circuit has been inactive for a threshold amount of time.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one control signal includes a second control signal that causes the switching circuit to couple the antenna circuit to the at least one processing circuit to exit the standby mode and enter the active mode.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the at least one processing circuit generates the second control signal when the output signal indicates that the sensed electrical signal has an amplitude greater than or equal to a threshold amplitude.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the antenna circuit includes a tunable antenna, and wherein the threshold amplitude is based on a resonant frequency of the tunable antenna.

7. The device of claim 5 , wherein the at least one processing circuit includes:

a microprocessor that sends the first control signal to the switching circuit; and

a radio circuit coupled to the microprocessor and that sends the second control signal to the switching circuit.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein, in the active mode, the radio circuit generates and sends radio signals based on information received from the microprocessor.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the information includes at least one of temperature information, location information, vibration information, and humidity information.

10. A method, comprising: receiving, by an antenna circuit, a radio frequency (RF) signal and converting the RF signal into an electrical signal; sensing, by a sensing circuit, the electrical signal and outputting an output signal based on the sensed electrical signal; generating, by at least one processing circuit, at least one control signal based on the output signal; and coupling, by a switching circuit and based on the at least one control signal, the antenna circuit to either the sensing circuit to enter a standby mode and to the at least one processing circuit to exit the standby mode and enter an active mode, wherein the at least one control signal includes a first control signal that causes the switching circuit to couple the antenna circuit to the sensing circuit to enter the standby mode.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the generating includes generating the first control signal in response to determining that the at least one processing circuit is being turned off.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the determining includes determining that the at least one signal processing circuit has been inactive for a threshold amount of time.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the generating the at least one control signal includes generating a second control signal that causes the coupling to couple the antenna circuit to the at least one processing circuit to exit the standby mode and enter the active mode.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the generating the second control signal includes generating the second control signal when the output signal indicates that the sensed electrical signal has an amplitude greater than or equal to a threshold amplitude.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the antenna circuit includes a tunable antenna, and wherein the threshold amplitude is based on a resonant frequency of the tunable antenna.

16. A system, comprising: a source that produces a radio frequency (RF) signal; and a device that includes: an antenna circuit that receives the RF signal and that converts the RF signal into an electrical signal; a sensing circuit that senses the electrical signal, and that outputs an output signal based on the sensed electrical signal; at least one processing circuit that generates at least one control signal based on the output signal; and a switching circuit that couples the antenna circuit to either the sensing circuit to enter a standby mode and the at least one processing circuit to exit the standby mode and enter an active mode based on the at least one control signal, wherein the at least one control signal includes a first control signal that causes the switching circuit to couple the antenna circuit to the sensing circuit to enter the standby mode.

17. The system of claim 16 ,

wherein the at least one processing circuit generates the first control signal in response to determining that the at least one processing circuit is being turned off.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the at least one control signal includes a second control signal that causes the switching circuit to decouple the antenna circuit from the sensing circuit and to couple the antenna circuit to the at least one processing circuit to exit the standby mode and enter the active mode, and

wherein the at least one processing circuit generates the second control signal when the output signal indicates that an amplitude of the sensed electrical signal is greater than or equal to a threshold amplitude.
