Abstract

The systems and methods described herein relate to heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and water heating systems in relation to a building and residential automation system. Some embodiments of the systems and methods described herein relate to HVAC systems and water systems in relation to an integration of building or residential automation systems. Specifically, the disclosure relates to maintaining a desirable water temperature for a desirable time period. By reducing unnecessary heating of water, the systems disclosed herein may result in fewer wasted resources and a lower utility bill. In one embodiment, a method for security and/or automation systems may be disclosed. The method may comprise monitoring a status of a water heater and monitoring an occupancy status of a residence. The status of the water heater may adjust, automatically, based at least in part on the monitoring.

1. A method for a security and automation system, comprising:

receiving a temperature of a room via a first sensor associated with the room;

identifying a climate policy of the room based at least in part on receiving the temperature, the climate policy comprising at least one temperature threshold;

determining whether an amount of sunlight from the sun is incident on a window of the room based at least in part on a position of the sun relative to the window of the room, wherein the position of the sun is determined based at least in part on weather data received from a database indicating a current position of the sun and a seasonal position of the sun, the position of the sun relative to the window being indicative of the incidence of sunlight on the window;

receiving a second temperature of a second room different than the room via a second sensor;

determining a rate of airflow for an HVAC central heating and cooling unit associated with the room based at least in part on the identified climate policy, the determination of whether the amount of sunlight from the sun is incident on the window, the received temperature, and the received second temperature; and

adjusting at least one home automation device based at least in part on determining the rate of airflow for the HVAC central heating and cooling unit.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

monitoring an occupancy status of a residence associated with the room, wherein the occupancy status comprises at least a detected occupancy level of the residence and an activity status of one or more occupants comprising the detected occupancy level, wherein determining the rate of airflow is based at least in part on monitoring the occupancy status of the residence.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

adjusting an internal water temperate of a water heater associated with the room based at least in part on monitoring the occupancy status of the room.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein adjusting the at least one home automation device is based at least in part on the activity status of one or more occupants and the detected occupancy level.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the at least one home automation device comprises adjusting a tint level of a tintable window in the room, adjusting one or more automated blinds in the room, or a combination thereof.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein adjusting the one or more automated blinds in the room comprises raising or lowering slats of the one or more automated blinds or tilting the slats of the one or more automated blinds.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

adjusting the rate of airflow based at least in part on adjusting the at least one home automation device, wherein adjusting the rate of airflow is based at least in part on an airflow threshold, a monitored rate of airflow of the HVAC central heating and cooling unit, a monitored outside temperature, or a combination thereof.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a second climate policy associated with the second room, wherein determining the rate of airflow is based at least in part on receiving the second climate policy.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an approximate energy savings of the room based at least in part on adjusting the at least one home automation device; and

generating an energy savings report based at least in part on determining the approximate energy savings of the room.

10. An apparatus for security and/or automation systems, comprising:

a processor;

memory in electronic communication with the processor; and

instructions stored in the memory, the instructions being executable by the processor to:

receive a temperature of a room via a first sensor associated with the room;

identify a climate policy of the room based at least in part on receiving the temperature, the climate policy comprising at least one temperature threshold;

determine whether an amount of sunlight from the sun is incident on a window of the room based at least in part on a position of the sun relative to the window of the room, wherein the position of the sun is determined based at least in part on weather data received from a database indicating a current position of the sun and a seasonal position of the sun, the position of the sun relative to the window being indicative of the incidence of sunlight on the window;

receive a second temperature of a second room different than the room via a second sensor;

determining a rate of airflow for an HVAC central heating and cooling unit associated with the room based at least in part on the identified climate policy, the determination of whether the amount of sunlight from the sun is incident on the window, the received temperature, and the received second temperature; and

adjust at least one home automation device based at least in part on determining the rate of airflow for the HVAC central heating and cooling unit.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , the instructions further executable by the processor to:

monitor an occupancy status of a residence associated with the room, wherein the occupancy status comprises at least a detected occupancy level of the residence and an activity status of one or more occupants comprising the detected occupancy level, wherein determining the rate of airflow is based at least in part on monitoring the occupancy status of the residence.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , the instructions further executable by the processor to:

adjust an internal water temperate of a water heater associated with the room based at least in part on monitoring the occupancy status of the room.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein adjusting the at least one home automation device is based at least in part on the activity status of one or more occupants and the detected occupancy level.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein adjusting the at least one home automation device comprises adjusting a tint level of a tintable window in the room, adjusting one or more automated blinds in the room, or a combination thereof.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein adjusting the one or more automated blinds in the room comprises raising or lowering slats of the one or more automated blinds or tilting the slats of the one or more automated blinds.

16. The apparatus of claim 10 , the instructions further executable by the processor to:

adjust the rate of airflow based at least in part on adjusting the at least one home automation device, wherein adjusting the rate of airflow is based at least in part on an airflow threshold, a monitored rate of airflow of the HVAC central heating and cooling unit, a monitored outside temperature, or a combination thereof.
