Abstract

A product and system for identifying and monitoring a characteristic including the part ID, presence, condition, usage and/or performance of ground-engaging products used on various kinds of earth working equipment.

Claims (19)

1. A monitoring system comprising:

a ground-engaging product secured to earth working equipment;

a monitoring device secured to the ground-engaging product to monitor a characteristic of the ground-engaging product and wirelessly transmit data pertaining to the characteristic;

at least one remote device to wirelessly receive the data;

at least one database with worksite information pertaining to a characteristic of the worksite where the earth working equipment is operating; and

at least one programmable logic device to process the data and the worksite information to estimate the remaining useful life for the ground-engaging product.

2. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the worksite information includes the level of fragmentation of the earthen material.

3. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the worksite information includes the abrasiveness of the earthen material.

4. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the worksite information includes the hardness of the earthen material.

5. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the worksite information pertains to the geology of the worksite.

6. The monitoring system of claim 1 including

a GPS device secured to one of the ground-engaging product and the earth working equipment to detect the location on the worksite where the earth working equipment is working and wirelessly transmit such location information, wherein the at least one remote device receives the location information, the at least one database includes the worksite information for different locations of the worksite, and the programmable logic device processes the location information, the data, and the worksite information to estimate the remaining useful life for the ground-engaging product.

7. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the ground-engaging product is a wear part secured to a bucket, the at least one database includes wear rate information of wear parts previously secured to the earth working equipment, and the at least one programmable logic device processes the wear rate information, the data, and the worksite information to determine an estimated remaining useful life for the wear part.

8. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the ground-engaging product is a wear part configured for attachment to a digging edge of a bucket.

9. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the ground-engaging product is a component of an excavating tooth.

10. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the ground-engaging product is an excavating bucket.

11. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the monitoring device is in a lip of an excavating bucket.

12. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the ground-engaging product is a blade secured to a moldboard of the earth working equipment.

13. The monitoring system of claim 1 wherein the ground-engaging product is a pick secured to a drum of the earth working equipment.
