Abstract

An electronic device that dynamically adapts sound based at least in part on spatial information determined from ambient or background sound is described. Based at least in part on sound measurements corresponding to ambient noise in an environment, which may include a second electronic device, the electronic device may determine a characteristic of the environment. For example, the characteristic may include: a size of the environment, an acoustic mode of the environment and/or a reverberation time of the environment, which is associated with at least a frequency. Then, based at least in part on the determined characteristics, the electronic device may calculate an acoustic radiation pattern. Next, the electronic device may provide audio content and second information specifying the acoustic radiation pattern for the second electronic device.

Claims (36)

1. An electronic device, comprising:

an interface circuit configured to communicate with a second electronic device, wherein the electronic device comprises a circuit, software executed by a processor or both that is configured to:

acquire sound measurements for an environment, wherein the sound measurements correspond to ambient noise in the environment, wherein the sound measurements comprise passive sound measurements during a quiet time interval when a speaker is not outputting sound into the environment, and wherein the ambient noise is associated with diffuse energy that is coupled into the environment and is filtered by a geometry of the environment;

determine, based at least in part on the sound measurements, a characteristic of the environment;

calculate, based at least in part on the determined characteristics, an acoustic radiation pattern; and

provide, from the interface circuit, audio content and second information specifying the acoustic radiation pattern for the second electronic device.

2. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device comprises an acoustic sensor configured to perform the sound measurements.

3. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein acquiring the sound measurements involves receiving, at the interface circuit, information that specifies the sound measurements, which is associated with the second electronic device.

4. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the acoustic radiation pattern comprises a beam having a principal direction.

5. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic comprises one of: a size of the environment, an acoustic mode of the environment, or a reverberation time of the environment, which is associated with at least a frequency.

6. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the sound measurements specify one of: two-dimensional sound, or three-dimensional sound.

7. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device is configured to provide, from the interface circuit, an instruction for the second electronic device to output one or more acoustic signals in different directions; and

wherein the measured sound corresponds to a response of the environment to the one or more acoustic signals.

8. The electronic device of claim 7 , wherein the one or more acoustic signals comprise one or more test signals associated with one or more carrier frequencies.

9. The electronic device of claim 7 , wherein the one or more acoustic signals comprise music with one or more embedded test signals associated with one or more carrier frequencies.

10. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium for use with an electronic device, the computer-readable storage medium storing program instructions that, when executed by the electronic device, causes the electronic device to perform one or more operations comprising:

acquiring sound measurements for an environment, wherein the sound measurements correspond to ambient noise in the environment, wherein the sound measurements comprise passive sound measurements during a quiet time interval when a speaker is not outputting sound into the environment and wherein the ambient noise is associated with diffuse energy that is coupled into the environment and is filtered by a geometry of the environment;

determining, based at least in part on the sound measurements, a characteristic of the environment;

calculating, based at least in part on the determined characteristics, an acoustic radiation pattern; and

providing, from an interface circuit in the electronic device, audio content and second information specifying the acoustic radiation pattern for a second electronic device.

11. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein acquiring the sound measurements involves performing the sound measurements using an acoustic sensor in the electronic device.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein acquiring the sound measurements involves receiving, at the interface circuit, information that specifies the sound measurements, which is associated with the second electronic device.

13. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the acoustic radiation pattern comprises a beam having a principal direction.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the characteristic comprises one of: a size of the environment, an acoustic mode of the environment, or a reverberation time of the environment, which is associated with at least a frequency.

15. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the sound measurements specify one of: two-dimensional sound, or three-dimensional sound.

16. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the one or more operations comprise providing, from the interface circuit, an instruction for the second electronic device to output one or more acoustic signals in different directions; and

wherein the measured sound corresponds to a response of the environment to the one or more acoustic signals.

17. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the one or more acoustic signals comprise one or more test signals associated with one or more carrier frequencies.

18. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the one or more acoustic signals comprise music with one or more embedded test signals associated with one or more carrier frequencies.

19. A method for calculating an acoustic radiation pattern, comprising:

by an electronic device:

acquiring sound measurements for an environment, wherein the sound measurements correspond to ambient noise in the environment, wherein the sound measurements comprise passive sound measurements during a quiet time interval when a speaker is not outputting sound into the environment, and wherein the ambient noise is associated with diffuse energy that is coupled into the environment and is filtered by a geometry of the environment;

determining, based at least in part on the sound measurements, a characteristic of the environment;

calculating, based at least in part on the determined characteristics, an acoustic radiation pattern; and

providing, from an interface circuit in the electronic device, audio content and second information specifying the acoustic radiation pattern for a second electronic device.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the characteristic comprises one of: a size of the environment, an acoustic mode of the environment, or a reverberation time of the environment, which is associated with at least a frequency.
