Abstract

An electronic device that performs automatic de-baffling is described. Based at least in part on information corresponding to a boundary of an environment (which may be acquired by a sensor, such as a microphone or an image sensor), the electronic device may determine a location of the boundary, which is proximate to the electronic device. Then, based at least in part on the location, the electronic device may calculate a modified acoustic radiation pattern of the electronic device, where a superposition of the modification acoustic radiation pattern and acoustic reflections from the boundary approximately matches a target acoustic radiation pattern of the electronic device. Next, using the modified acoustic radiation pattern, the electronic device may output sound corresponding to audio content from a set of drivers.

Claims (36)

1. An electronic device, comprising:

a set of drivers configured to output sound; and

a sensor configured to acquire information corresponding to a boundary of an environment, wherein the sensor comprises a microphone configured to perform sound measurements when the set of drivers is not outputting the sound, wherein the measured sound corresponds to one of: two-dimensional sound, or three-dimensional sound, and wherein the electronic device comprises a circuit, software executed by a processor or both that is configured to:

acquire the information;

determine, based at least in part on the information, a location of the boundary, which is proximate to the electronic device;

calculate, based at least in part on the location, a modified acoustic radiation pattern of the electronic device, wherein a superposition of the modification acoustic radiation pattern and acoustic reflections from the boundary approximately matches a target acoustic radiation pattern of the electronic device; and

output, from the set of drivers and using the modified acoustic radiation pattern, sound corresponding to audio content.

2. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the modification comprises a change in frequency spectrum of the audio content in a band of frequencies.

3. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the modified acoustic radiation pattern comprises a beam having a principal direction.

4. The electronic device of claim 3 , wherein the modification comprises a change in the principal direction of the beam.

5. The electronic device of claim 3 , wherein the modification comprises a change in a width of the beam.

6. The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises an interface circuit configured to perform wireless ranging; and

wherein acquiring the information involves performing wireless ranging using the interface circuit.

7. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium for use with an electronic device, the computer-readable storage medium storing program instructions that, when executed by the electronic device, causes the electronic device to perform one or more operations comprising:

acquiring, using a sensor, information corresponding to a boundary of an environment, wherein the sensor comprises a microphone that performs sound measurements when a set of drivers in the electronic device is not outputting the sound, and wherein the measured sound corresponds to one of: two-dimensional sound, or three-dimensional sound;

determining, based at least in part on the information, a location of the boundary, which is proximate to the electronic device;

calculating, based at least in part on the location, a modified acoustic radiation pattern of the electronic device, wherein a superposition of the modification acoustic radiation pattern and acoustic reflections from the boundary approximately matches a target acoustic radiation pattern of the electronic device; and

outputting, from the set of drivers and using the modified acoustic radiation pattern, sound corresponding to audio content.

8. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the modification comprises a change in frequency spectrum of the audio content in a band of frequencies.

9. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the modified acoustic radiation pattern comprises a beam having a principal direction.

10. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the modification comprises a change in the principal direction of the beam.

11. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 , wherein the modification comprises a change in a width of the beam.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the sensor comprises an interface circuit that performs wireless ranging; and

wherein acquiring the information involves performing wireless ranging using the interface circuit.

13. A method for outputting audio content, comprising:

by an electronic device:

acquiring, using a sensor, information corresponding to a boundary of an environment, wherein the sensor comprises a microphone that performs sound measurements when a set of drivers in the electronic device is not outputting the sound, and wherein the measured sound corresponds to one of: two-dimensional sound, or three-dimensional sound;

determining, based at least in part on the information, a location of the boundary, which is proximate to the electronic device;

calculating, based at least in part on the location, a modified acoustic radiation pattern of the electronic device, wherein a superposition of the modification acoustic radiation pattern and acoustic reflections from the boundary approximately matches a target acoustic radiation pattern of the electronic device; and

outputting, from the set of drivers and using the modified acoustic radiation pattern, sound corresponding to audio content.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the modification comprises a change in frequency spectrum of the audio content in a band of frequencies.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the modified acoustic radiation pattern comprises a beam having a principal direction.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the modification comprises a change in the principal direction of the beam.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the modification comprises a change in a width of the beam.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the sensor comprises an interface circuit that performs wireless ranging; and

wherein acquiring the information involves performing wireless ranging using the interface circuit.
