Method and system for presenting additional content at a media system
View Patent ↗A media system, receives a received sequence of media content, for presentation at the media system and generates a comparison fingerprint of the received sequence of media content. The comparison fingerprint is for comparison with a plurality of reference fingerprints so as to identify the received sequence of media content. The media system sends a request for identification of additional content to a server system. The request is based at least in part on the comparison fingerprint. The media system receives a response to the request, including information enabling additional content to be selected for display at the media system based at least in part on the identification of the received sequence of media content, and presents a displayed sequence of media content that includes at least a portion of the received sequence of media content and at least a portion of the additional content.
1. A method comprising:
receiving, by a media system, a first sequence of media content;
receiving, by the media system, a subset of reference fingerprints selected from a plurality of reference fingerprints based on the reference fingerprints of the subset of reference fingerprints being associated with a subset of channels of a plurality of channels that the media system is used to watch more frequently than other channels of the plurality of channels;
generating, by the media system, a comparison fingerprint using first media content within the first sequence of media content;
determining, by the media system, that the comparison fingerprint does not match any reference fingerprints of the subset of reference fingerprints;
sending, by the media system, to a server system, a request for additional media content that includes the comparison fingerprint, wherein, based on the determining, the media system includes the comparison fingerprint in the request for comparison with additional reference fingerprints at the server system;
receiving, by the media system, a response to the request that includes information enabling the media system to replace or supplement the first media content with second media content, wherein the information comprises data indicative of an insertion point for the second media content;
determining, by the media system, a frame within the first sequence of media content at which to present the second media content based on the data indicative of the insertion point; and
providing, by the media system, for display a second sequence of media content that includes a portion of the first sequence of media content that occurs prior to the frame and includes the second media content.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the second media content comprises replacement media content for display in place of the first media content, and wherein providing for display the second sequence of media content comprises providing for display the first sequence of media content with the first media content replaced by the second media content.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the first media content comprises a generic advertisement, and wherein the replacement media content comprises a targeted advertisement.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second media content comprises supplemental content for display overlaying the first media content, and wherein providing for display the second sequence of media content comprises providing for display the first sequence of media content with the supplemental content overlaying the first media content.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the supplemental content comprises interactive supplemental content.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information comprises the second media content.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information comprises an identifier of the second media content that enables the media system to obtain the second media content.
8. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored therein instructions that are executable to cause a media system to perform functions comprising:
receiving a first sequence of media content;
receiving a subset of reference fingerprints selected from a plurality of reference fingerprints based on the reference fingerprints of the subset of reference fingerprints being associated with a subset of channels of a plurality of channels that the media system is used to watch more frequently than other channels of the plurality of channels;
generating a comparison fingerprint using first media content within the first sequence of media content;
determining that the comparison fingerprint does not match any reference fingerprints of the subset of reference fingerprints;
sending, to a server system, a request for additional media content that includes the comparison fingerprint, wherein based on the determining, the media system includes the comparison fingerprint in the request for comparison with additional reference fingerprints at the server system;
receiving a response to the request that includes information enabling the media system to replace or supplement the first media content with second media content, wherein the information comprises data indicative of an insertion point for the second media content;
determining, by the media system, a frame within the first sequence of media content at which to present the second media content based on the data indicative of the insertion point; and
providing for display a second sequence of media content that includes a portion of the first sequence of media content that occurs prior to the frame and includes the second media content.
9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the second media content comprises replacement media content for display in place of the first media content, and wherein providing for display the second sequence of media content comprises providing for display the first sequence of media content with the first media content replaced by the second media content.
10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein the second media content comprises supplemental content for display overlaying the first media content, and wherein providing for display the second sequence of media content comprises providing for display the first sequence of media content with the supplemental content overlaying the first media content.
11. A media system comprising:
a processing unit; and
a computer-readable medium having stored therein instructions that are executable to cause the media system to perform functions comprising:
receiving a first sequence of media content,
receiving a subset of reference fingerprints selected from a plurality of reference fingerprints based on the reference fingerprints of the subset of reference fingerprints being associated with a subset of channels of a plurality of channels that the media system is used to watch more frequently than other channels of the plurality of channels,
generating a comparison fingerprint using first media content within the first sequence of media content,
determining that the comparison fingerprint does not match any reference fingerprints of the subset of reference fingerprints,
sending, to a server system, a request for additional media content that includes the comparison fingerprint, wherein, based on the determining, the media system includes the comparison fingerprint in the request for comparison with additional reference fingerprints at the server system,
receiving a response to the request that includes information enabling the media system to replace or supplement the first media content with second media content, wherein the information comprises data indicative of an insertion point for the second media content,
determining a frame within the first sequence of media content at which to present the second media content based on the data indicative of the insertion point, and
providing for display a second sequence of media content that includes a portion of the first sequence of media content that occurs prior to the frame and includes the second media content.

The media system of claim 11 , wherein the second media content comprises replacement media content for display in place of the first media content, and wherein providing for display the second sequence of media content comprises providing for display the first sequence of media content with the first media content replaced by the second media content.
13. The media system of claim 11 , wherein the second media content comprises supplemental content for display overlaying the first media content, and wherein providing for display the second sequence of media content comprises providing for display the first sequence of media content with the supplemental content overlaying the first media content.
