Abstract

An apparatus includes a computer enclosure with a first fan, a second fan, a fan controller, and an input for receiving a signal from a microphone indicating an amount of noise at a target location. The apparatus further includes a first actuator coupled to the first fan for adjusting an axial position of the first fan, wherein the controller controls the operation of the first actuator to position the first fan to reduce the noise indicated by the signal from the microphone with the first and second fans in operation. The microphone senses sound pressure and the controller automatically adjusts a position of one or more fans using an actuator to change the distance from the fan to the microphone, which may be co-located with a user, to provide destructive interference at the location of the microphone.

Claims (18)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a computer enclosure including a first fan, a second fan, a fan controller, and an input for receiving a signal from a microphone indicating an amount of noise at a target location; and

a first actuator coupled to the first fan for adjusting an axial position of the first fan, wherein the controller controls the operation of the first actuator to position the first fan to reduce the noise indicated by the signal from the microphone with the first and second fans in operation.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first actuator includes an electric motor controlling a rotary gear that engages linear gear teeth secured to the fan.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

an extendable duct including a plurality of nested tubes, wherein the fan is coupled to the extendable duct and movement of the fan causes the extendable duct to extend or retract.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the microphone is a headset microphone.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first and second fans are positioned side-by-side within the computer enclosure.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fan controller further controls the speed of at least one of the first fan and the second fan.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a second actuator coupled to the second fan for adjusting an axial position of the second fan, wherein the controller controls the operation of the second actuator to position the second fan to reduce the noise indicated by the signal from the microphone with the first and second fans in operation.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the controller controls the position and speed of the first and second fans to provide destructive interference of sound waves at a position of the microphone.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the controller is a central processing unit.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising:

a non-transitory computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith, wherein the program instructions are executable by the central processing unit to:

prompt a user for input in response to adjusting the position of one or more of the first and second fans, adjusting the speed of one or more of the first and second fans, or adjusting both the position and speed of one or more of the first and second fans;

receive user input identifying a user perception whether the sound pressure has been reduced; and

further adjust the position or speed of one or more of the first and second fans in response to user input.
