Polyester polyols and methods of making and using the same
Polyester polyols are generally disclosed, including methods of making and using them. In some embodiments, the polyester polyols are incorporated into a block copolymer, such as a polyurethane block copolymer. In some embodiments, the polyurethane block copolymers can be used as compatibilizing agents, which can be used, for example, in polymer blends, polymer alloys, solutions, emulsions, as well as in extruded and injection molded articles. In some embodiments, at least a portion of the polyurethane block copolymer is derived from a renewable source.
1. A block copolymer, comprising a first block and a second block, wherein the first block is formed from a polyester polyol;
wherein the polyester polyol comprises constitutional units formed from (a) short-chain diols and (b) diacids or esters thereof;
wherein the diacids or esters thereof are selected from the group consisting of 1,18-octadecanedioic acid, 1,20-eicosanedioic acid, and any esters thereof;
wherein the short-chain diols are selected from the group consisting of diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, pentaethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, and tetrapropylene glycol; and
wherein the weight-to-weight ratio of the 1,18-octadecanedioic acid, or esters thereof, to dibasic acids having fewer than 18 carbon atoms, or esters thereof, is at least 20:1.
2. The block copolymer of claim 1 , wherein the short-chain diols are selected from the group consisting of diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, and pentaethylene glycol.
3. The block copolymer of claim 2 , wherein the short-chain diols are selected from the group consisting of diethylene glycol and triethylene glycol.
4. The block copolymer of claim 3 , wherein the short-chain diols are diethylene glycol.
5. The block copolymer of claim 3 , wherein the short-chain diols are triethylene glycol.
6. The block copolymer of claim 1 , wherein the short-chain diols are selected from the group consisting of dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, and tetrapropylene glycol.
7. The block copolymer of claim 6 , wherein the short-chain diols are selected from the group consisting of dipropylene glycol and tripropylene glycol.
8. The block copolymer of claim 1 , wherein the diacids or esters thereof are selected from the group consisting of 1,18-octadecanedioic acid and any esters thereof.
