Abstract

An electronic device displays an image during a communication between two people. The image represents one of the people to the communication. The electronic device determines a location where to place the image and displays the image such that the image appears to exist at the location.

Claims (51)

1. A method that displays suggested locations where to place three dimensional (3D) images representing people to telephone calls, the method comprising:

executing, over a wireless network, a telephone call between a head mounted display that displays a location to a first person wearing the head mounted display and a portable electronic device with a second person who is remote from the first person;

determining, with the head mounted display worn by the first person, two different suggested locations that are at the location being displayed, separate from each other, and located where a 3D image that represents the second person can be placed during the telephone call between the first person and the second person;

displaying, with the head mounted display worn by the first person, the two different suggested locations to the first person so the first person can select one of the two different suggested locations for where to place the 3D image that represents the second person during the telephone call between the first person and the second person;

receiving, at the head mounted display and from the first person, a selection of one of the two different suggested locations; and

displaying, with the head mounted display worn by the first person during the telephone call, the 3D image that represents the second person at the one of the two different suggested locations selected by the first person.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

simultaneously displaying, with a display of the head mounted display during the telephone call, the two different suggested locations with color to visually distinguish the two different suggested locations from other locations being displayed to the first person.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

displaying, with the head mounted display during the telephone call, the two different suggested locations as 3D images that represent the second person so the first person has a preview of where the 3D image that represents the second person will be placed after the first person selects the one of the two different suggested locations.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

displaying, with the head mounted display during the telephone call, a location that is not recommended for where the 3D image that represents the second person will be placed during the telephone call between the first person and the second person, wherein the location that is not recommended is visually distinguishable with color from the two different suggested locations.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

displaying, with the head mounted display during the telephone call, the two different suggested locations with a 3D perimeter that shows a size and a shape of the two different suggested locations.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

retrieving, with the head mounted display during the telephone call, a map that shows different available locations where to place the 3D image that represents the second person during the telephone call between the first person and the second person, wherein the map visually identifies with light locations that are not recommended for receiving the 3D image that represents the second person.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

displaying, with the head mounted display, different locations where the 3D image that represents the second persons appeared in previous telephone calls between the first person and the second person.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

displaying, with the head mounted display before the telephone call commences, a preview of the 3D image that represents the second person to show the first person where the 3D image that represents the second person will be placed during the telephone call.

9. A non-transitory computer readable storage media storing instructions that are executed by a one or more electronic devices in a computer system to perform a method that displays suggested locations with a head mounted display where to place virtual images that represent people during telephone calls, the method comprising:

determining, with the one or more electronic devices, locations that are available to include a virtual image that represents a second person in a telephone call between a first person and the second person;

visually providing, with a display of a head mounted display being worn by the first person, the locations that are available to include the virtual image that represents the second person in the telephone call between the first person and the second person;

receiving, from the first person, a selection of one of the locations that is available to include the virtual image that represents the second person in the telephone call between the first person and the second person; and

displaying, with the display of the head mounted display and in response to receiving the selection, the virtual image at the one of the locations selected by the first person during the telephone call.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage media storing instructions of claim 9 in which the method further comprises:

determining, with the one or more electronic devices, the locations that are available to include the virtual image that represents the second person in the telephone call between the first person and the second person.

11. The non-transitory computer readable storage media storing instructions of claim 9 in which the method further comprises:

displaying, with the head mounted display before the telephone call commences, a preview of the virtual image that represents the second person to show the first person where the virtual image that represents the second person will be placed during the telephone call.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage media storing instructions of claim 9 in which the method further comprises:

visually highlighting, on the display of the head mounted display, locations that are not suitable to include the virtual image that represents the second person in the telephone call between the first person and the second person.

13. The non-transitory computer readable storage media storing instructions of claim 9 in which the method further comprises:

simultaneously displaying, with the display of the head mounted display, the locations so the first person can preview different places where to place the virtual image that represents the second person in the telephone call between the first person and the second person.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage media storing instructions of claim 9 in which the method further comprises:

displaying, with the display of the head mounted display, suggested locations in a field of view provided by the display where the first person can move to have the telephone call with the second person.

15. The non-transitory computer readable storage media storing instructions of claim 9 in which the method further comprises:

determining, with the one or more electronic devices, whether any of the locations are restricted as being designated areas not available for including an image during a communication and as such are unavailable to include the virtual image that represents the second person in the telephone call between the first person and the second person.

16. A method executed by a one or more electronic devices in a computer system to display with a head mounted display suggested locations where to place virtual images that represent people during telephone calls, the method comprising:

displaying, with a display of a head mounted display worn by a first person, a virtual location that includes the first person;

determining, with the one or more electronic devices, locations that are available at the virtual location to include a virtual image that represents a second person in a telephone call between the first person and the second person;

displaying, with the display of the head mounted display being worn by the first person, the locations that are available to include the virtual image that represents the second person in the telephone call between the first person and the second person;

receiving, from the first person, a selection of one of the locations that are available to include the virtual image that represents the second person in the telephone call between the first person and the second person; and

displaying, with the display of the head mounted display being worn by the first person and in response to receiving the selection, the virtual image at the one of the locations selected by the first person during the telephone call.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

displaying, with the head mounted display, the locations with a three dimensional (3D) outline that shows a size and a shape of the locations.

18. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

displaying, before the telephone call commences with the head mounted display and at the locations, a preview of the virtual image that represents the second person to show the first person where the virtual image can be placed during the telephone call.

19. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

displaying, with the head mounted display, a different location to where the first person can move at the virtual location during the telephone call, wherein the different location is highlighted with color to enable the first person to visually distinguish the different location from other locations at the virtual location.

20. The method of claim 16 further comprising:

displaying, with the head mounted display, a different location highlighted with color to show where the first person can move the virtual image during the telephone call.
