Abstract

A cocking system for retracting a string carrier on a crossbow that is substantially silent during operation. The cocking system includes a string carrier with a catch that is moveable between a closed position that engages a draw string, and an open position that releases the draw string. The string carrier slides along a center rail between a released configuration and a retracted position that locates the draw string in a drawn configuration. A trigger is positioned to move the catch from the closed position to the open position to fire the crossbow when the string carrier is in the retracted position. The cocking system includes a retaining mechanism that retains the string carrier in the retracted position while permitting a draw string to disengage and fire an arrow.

Claims (100)

1. A cocking system for a crossbow, the crossbow including a first limb and a second limb coupled to a riser, a center rail supporting the riser, and a draw string that translates between a released configuration and a drawn configuration, the cocking system comprising:

a string carrier coupled to the center rail and configured to engage with the draw string in the released configuration and translate to a retracted position to locate the draw string in the drawn configuration;

a rotation arrester including:

a rotating member comprising a spool having a non-cylindrical core,

a stationary support shaft disposed within the rotating member, wherein during operation of the crossbow, the rotating member rotates around the stationary support shaft,

a plurality of recesses defined on at least one of the stationary support shaft or the rotating member, and

a plurality of interference members axially parallel with the stationary support shaft, individual interference members of the plurality of interference members residing within individual recesses of the plurality of recesses, the individual interference members being configured to selectively permit rotation of the rotating member in a first direction and restrict rotation of the rotating member in a second direction;

a flexible member coupled to the non-cylindrical core and the string carrier, wherein, during operation of the crossbow, the flexible member spools around the non-cylindrical core; and

a cocking handle configured to rotate the rotating member and translate the string carrier to the retracted position.

2. The cocking system of claim 1 , wherein:

the rotating member includes an inside surface having a first diameter, and wherein:

the stationary support shaft has second diameter less than the first diameter; and

the plurality of interference members shift between a first location in which the plurality of interference members are compressively engaged with the inside surface of the rotating member to inhibit rotation of the rotating member, and a second location in which the plurality of interference members are sufficiently disengaged from the inside surface to permit free rotation of the rotating member.

3. The cocking system of claim 1 , wherein the rotation arrester inhibits rotation of the rotating member in the drawn configuration in a direction that would permit the string carrier to move toward the released configuration.

4. The cocking system of claim 1 , wherein the string carrier comprises a dry fire lockout moveable between a disengaged position and a lockout position that inhibits the draw string from moving to the released configuration.

5. The cocking system of claim 1 , further comprising a torque control mechanism located in at least one of the cocking handle or a stock of the crossbow.

6. The cocking system of claim 1 , wherein the cocking handle is detachable from the rotation arrester.

7. The cocking system of claim 1 , wherein the stationary support shaft is fixedly coupled to the center rail.

8. The cocking system of claim 1 , wherein the rotating member further comprises a housing disposed about the stationary support shaft, the housing including a plurality of openings, and

wherein a portion of the individual interference members extend through individual openings of the plurality of openings to contact a surface of the rotating member.

The cocking system of claim 8 , further comprising a release coupled to the housing and movable in a first direction to allow rotation of the rotating member relative to the stationary support shaft, and in a second direction to inhibit rotation of the rotating member relative to the stationary support shaft.

10. The cocking system of claim 1 , wherein the rotation arrester further includes:

a second plurality of interference members axially parallel with the stationary support shaft, individual interference members of the second plurality of interference members residing within individual recesses of the plurality of recesses.

11. The cocking system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a retaining mechanism, separate from the flexible member, that retains the string carrier in the retracted position; and

a release lever coupled to the retaining mechanism and structured to disengage the retaining mechanism from the string carrier.

12. A crossbow comprising:

first and second flexible limbs attached to a riser;

a draw string that translates along a center rail between a released configuration and a drawn configuration; and

a cocking system comprising:

a string carrier, captured by the center rail, that slides back and forth between a drawn position and a retracted position, wherein in the drawn position the string carrier engages with the draw string in the released configuration and the string carrier slides to the retracted position to locate the draw string in the drawn configuration, the string carrier comprising:

a catch movable between a closed position that engages the draw string and an open position that releases the draw string, and

a sear moveable between a cocked position coupled with the catch to retain the catch in the closed position and a de-cocked position that releases the catch to the open position;

a rotation arrester including:

a rotating member comprising a core defining a spool surface and an inside surface,

a stationary support shaft disposed within the core, wherein, during operation of the crossbow, the rotating member rotates around the stationary support shaft,

a plurality of interference members engaged with an outer surface of the stationary support shaft and the inside surface of the core, and

a housing coupled to and movable relative to the stationary support shaft, the housing including a plurality of openings, wherein individual interference members of the plurality of interference members extend through individual openings of the plurality of openings to engage and disengage the inside surface of the core of the rotating member;

a flexible tension member attached to the string carrier and the rotating member, wherein, during operation of the crossbow, the flexible tension member wraps and unwraps around the spool surface of the rotating member concentrically with the plurality of interference members;

a cocking handle configured to rotate the rotating member to move the string carrier to the retracted position;

a release coupled to the housing and movable in a first direction to allow rotation of the core relative to the stationary support shaft, and in a second direction to inhibit rotation of the core relative to the stationary support shaft; and

a trigger mounted on the center rail that selectively moves the catch from the closed position to the open position when the string carrier is in the retracted position.

13. The crossbow of claim 12 , wherein the stationary support shaft defines a plurality of recesses,

wherein the individual interference members of the plurality of interference members shift between a first location compressively engaged with the inside surface of the core to inhibit rotation of the rotating member, and a second location sufficiently disengaged from the inside surface of the core to permit free rotation of the rotating member.

14. The crossbow of claim 12 , further comprising:

a retaining mechanism, separate from the flexible tension member, that retains the string carrier in the retracted position; and

a release lever coupled to the retaining mechanism and structured to disengage the retaining mechanism from the string carrier.

15. A method of cocking a crossbow that has at least first and second flexible limbs attached to a riser and a draw string that translates along a center rail between a released configuration and a drawn configuration, the method comprising:

sliding a string carrier captured by the center rail into engagement with the draw string in the released configuration;

closing a catch on the string carrier from an open position to a closed position that engages the draw string;

moving a sear from a de-cocked position to a cocked position to retain the catch in the closed position;

moving a safety between a free position and a safe position to inhibit the catch from moving to the open position;

providing a rotating member comprising a spool having a non-cylindrical core;

providing a stationary support shaft disposed within the rotating member;

shifting a plurality of interference members within the rotating member to a stop surface at which the plurality of interference members are disengaged from an inside surface of the rotating member to permit free rotation of the rotating member around the stationary support shaft;

rotating the rotating member around the stationary support shaft via a rotation arrester, the rotating member coupled to a flexible tension member attached to the string carrier to move the string carrier from a drawn position to a retracted position;

spooling the flexible tension member around the non-cylindrical core of the spool; and

shifting the plurality of interference members to a top location at which the plurality of interference members are compressively engaged with the inside surface of the rotating member to inhibit rotation of the rotating member.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

retaining the string carrier in the retracted position with a retaining mechanism that is separate from the flexible tension member; and

disengaging the retaining mechanism from the string carrier with a release lever coupled to the retaining mechanism.

17. A cocking system for a crossbow that has at least first and second flexible limbs attached to a riser, and a draw string that translates along a center rail between a released configuration and a drawn configuration, the cocking system comprising:

a string carrier captured by the center rail that slides freely back and forth to engage with the draw string in the released configuration and slides to a retracted position that locates the draw string in the drawn configuration, the string carrier comprising:

a catch movable between a closed position that engages the draw string and an open position that releases the draw string,

a sear moveable between a cocked position coupled with the catch to retain the catch in the closed position and a de-cocked position that releases the catch to the open position, and

a safety moveable between a free position and a safe position that inhibits the catch from moving to the open position;

a rotation arrester including:

a rotating member having a first plurality of teeth, a second plurality of teeth, and a spool surface extending between the first plurality of teeth and the second plurality of teeth,

a stationary support shaft disposed within the rotating member, wherein during operation of the crossbow, the rotating member rotates around the stationary support shaft,

a plurality of recesses defined on at least one of the stationary support shaft or the rotating member, and

a plurality of interference members axially parallel with the stationary support shaft, individual interference members of the plurality of interference members residing within individual recesses of the plurality of recesses, the individual interference members being configured to selectively permit rotation of the rotating member in a first direction and restrict rotation of the rotating member in a second direction;

a flexible tension member attached to the string carrier, wherein, during operation of the crossbow, the flexible tension member spools about the spool surface of the rotating member between the first plurality of teeth and the second plurality of teeth;

a cocking mechanism configured to rotate the rotating member to move the string carrier to the retracted position; and

a trigger mounted on the center rail that selectively moves the catch from the closed position to the open position when the string carrier is in the retracted position.

18. The cocking system of claim 17 , further comprising:

a retaining mechanism, separate from the flexible tension member, that retains the string carrier in the retracted position; and

a release lever coupled to the retaining mechanism and structured to disengage the retaining mechanism from the string carrier.

19. A crossbow with a cocking system comprising:

first and second flexible limbs attached to a riser;

a draw string that translates along a center rail between a released configuration and a drawn configuration;

a string carrier captured by the center rail that slides back and forth to engage with the draw string in the released configuration and slides to a retracted position that locates the draw string in the drawn configuration, the string carrier comprising:

a catch movable between a closed position that engages the draw string and an open position that releases the draw string,

a sear moveable between a cocked position coupled with the catch to retain the catch in the closed position and a de-cocked position to release the catch to the open position, and

a safety moveable between a free position and a safe position that inhibits the catch from moving to the open position;

a rotation arrester including:

a rotating member including a spool surface extending between a first plurality of teeth and a second plurality of teeth,

a stationary inner shaft disposed at least partially within the rotating member, the stationary inner shaft including a plurality of recesses located on an outer surface of the stationary inner shaft, wherein during operation of the crossbow, the rotating member rotates around the stationary inner shaft,

a plurality of interference members located between the first plurality of teeth and the second plurality of teeth of the rotating member, individual interference members of the plurality of interference members being disposed within individual recesses of the plurality of recesses, and selectively engaging an inner surface of the rotating member, and

a housing coupled to the stationary inner shaft, the housing including a plurality of openings, individual openings of the plurality of openings permitting the individual interference members to selectively engage and disengage the inner surface of the rotating member;

a flexible tension member coupled to the string carrier and the rotating member, wherein, during operation of the crossbow, the flexible tension member spools about the spool surface of the rotating member between the first plurality of teeth and the second plurality of teeth;

a cocking mechanism configured to rotate the rotating member to move the string carrier to the retracted position via the flexible tension member;

a release mechanism moveable between an activated position and a deactivated position, the release mechanism including a pawl that engages with the rotating member in the deactivated position and disengages with the rotating member in the activated position, the cocking mechanism being configured to move the string carrier to the retracted position when the release mechanism is in the activated position and in the deactivated position, wherein movement of the release mechanism to the activated position moves the housing to selectively disengage the plurality of interference members from the inner surface of the rotating member; and

a trigger mounted on the center rail that selectively moves the catch from the closed position to the open position when the string carrier is in the retracted position.

20. The crossbow with the cocking system of claim 19 , wherein the rotation arrester further comprises:

a second plurality of recesses located on the outer surface of the stationary inner shaft; a second plurality of interference members, individual second interference members of the second plurality of interference members being disposed within individual second recesses of the second plurality of recesses, and selectively disengaging the inner surface of the rotating member,

a second housing coupled to the stationary inner shaft, the second housing including a second plurality of openings, individual second openings of the second plurality of openings permitting the individual second interference members to selectively disengage the inner surface of the rotating member; and

one or more bearings coupled to the stationary inner shaft, the one or more bearings being disposed between the plurality of interference members and the second plurality of interference members.

21. The crossbow of claim 19 , further comprising:

a retaining mechanism, separate from the flexible tension member, that retains the string carrier in the retracted position; and

a release lever coupled to the retaining mechanism and structured to disengage the retaining mechanism from the string carrier.
